Doug Russell swept both motos in the 250cc clas over close competitor Cam johnson, while jeff Spencer also used a I-I tally to land the I 25cc title over jeff Mabery. It was a two-man battle for the lead in the opening 250cc Intermediate race. Russell put his Honda out front, allowing johnson to come within striking distance, but the change in positions never came about. Rosamond Suzuki rider Rick Guilmette and jerry Sherer held down fourth and fifth. In the final moto Russell took command again. johnson was in second but with each lap he pulled closer to the leader. Through the finish it was very close, but Russell took the win over johnson. Sherer advanced one position this moto and took third ahead of Steve Parry. Honda rider jeff Spencer took a convincing win in the 125cc Intermediate class to upset a couple of former Mini aces. Answer Products rider Jeff Mabery couldn't tag Spencer, but chalked-up a 2-3 tally for second overall. Willie Surratt is consistently taking top positions in the Intermediate class; this time he placed third with a 4-2 score. The final trophy winner was Lakewood Honda's Ray Groom. Mark Torgerson was the 250cc Novice winner despite a tough challenge from Glenn Gordy. In the first round, Honda riders Bill Carlson and Torgerson did everything they could to hold back Gordy. Still, Gordy worked past them to take the win over TorgersOl~, Andy Stix and Carlson. Torgerson succeeded in holding back Gordy in the final moto. At the start of the race, it was Torgerson, Stix and Gordy. Eventually, Gordy worked past Stix and settled into the runnerup spot behind Torgerson. A 2-1 tally earned Torgerson the first place trophy. Gordy managed second with a 1-2. Results PEE WEE: 1. Robby Hammond (Yam); 2. Kyle Fra· izer (Yam); 3. Pablo Lara (Kaw). PEE WEE EX: 1. First time Pro victory for Rutherford By Tom Corley ORANGE, CA, JUNE 10 Cen tuI)' Motorcycles-sponsored Tim Rutherford achieved his first 125cc Pro victory in today's California Racing Club motocross at Saddleback. Dan Bolle Racing's Edwin Arnet went two-for-two to take the 250cc Pro honors, while Yamaha's Rick johnson made a rare appearance and left with the 500cc Pro title. Rutherford is a former Mini Expert who made a recent comeback and advanced quickly to the Pro ranks. Rutherford battles the likes of Ron Turner at Ascot, but this time he decided to try a daytime event - and it paid off. The line-up included some very fast competition, including long-time Pro Gary Denton. In the first moto it was a two-man battle between Simpson!T&O Yamaha rider Richard Fleming and Suzuki of Riverside's Denton. Disastrously, those two hots hoes tangled on Webco Hill. Rutherford was following Denton so closely that he plowed right over Denton. This incident caused both Fleming and Denton to discontinue racing for the rest of the day. Rutherford took the win over Ray Romero, Rich Truchinski and Charles Osterday.
