In the 125cc National class, Can-Am rider Jimmy Ellis pulled off an upsel win, beating Honda's Marty Smith, 1-1-2 to 2-2-1. CAMEL PRO SERIES NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP JULY 21, 22, 1984 'LAGUNA SECA RACEWAY Harley-Davidson's Gary Scott won an AMA Grand National Championship Series Mile at San Jose after dicing for much of the race with Triumph's Mike Kidd. Gary's younger brother Hank made it two Scotts in the winner's circle by thwarting a last-lap draft pass by Yamaha's Kenny Roberts. Payne combined a win and a third-place finish in two classes of motocross competition with two top-10 finishes in GP racing for the overall honors. Other women in contention for the win were Lorie Watson, Janene Turton and Janice Kline. Bruce Lind scored a triple victory at a Seattle, Washington, road race. Lind took the 125 and 2S0cc Grand Prix classes, then topped Rick Curiston in 350cc Production. The th jrd round of the AMA National Observed Trials Series, held in Gold Bar, Washington, fell to Montesa rider Marland Whaley. Whaley dropped just 19 points; runner-up Don Sweet's tally was 27 on a Yamaha, but Sweet did retain the series points lead. Tommy Croft debuted a Honda-engined, Kelvin Franks-framed, singleshock creation at a CMC Saddleback motocross. When the day was over, Croft had netted second overall behind Tim Lunde (Hon). Two more Honda riders, Dave Eropkin and Mike Bell, finished third and fourth, respectively. Michigan rider Corky Keener paid a visit to Ascot for the weekly Friday night half mile show, but the local riders were ready for the challenge.
