Moto two wasn't his until a last-lap, mid-air pass of Denaki Glafkides (Hon) was performed. Referee Rich Wilson informed Nava that he might want to retire his lucky amateur racing shirt which has been his trademark, beca'use Wilson was preparing th.e necessary papers to move ava, to the Pro class. Whelchel, Spangler Albany SXwinners By Clay Ught ALBANY, OR, JU E 17 Eastside Kawasaki's Kelly Whelchel took two runner-up finishes to take the overall win in the 250cc Intermediate class at Albany's Supercro s. Joe Spangler battled Whelchel in both motos to take the I 25cc Pro class laurels on a . hot, dusty day of racing. There was no doubt in anyone's mind that the 250cc Pro/Intermediate/125cc Pro race was the best of the 15-event program. Rick Gunderson (Yam) looked to be too much for the 250cc Pro competition, but he couldn't stay on his YZ and ended his . moLO iii the hay bales. Gunderson's misfortune put Wayne Church (Kaw) into first to hold 0(( a freight train of riders consistng of Whelchel, Spangler, David Fox (Suz) and Scott Russell (Hon). Whelchel couldn't catch Church who (Jew to the (Jag, with Fox third and Russell fourth. Thirteen riders crested tum one and pounded the rough series of whoops that line the "night" course that doesn't allow riders to reach top speeds, but does make a rider work hard. Gunderson grabbed the lead for the second time with quick throttle response and led Spangler, Church, Don Robin on (Yam) and Fox. Church bailed 0[£ on the first lap, but mounted a charge, following Whelchel through traffic. Dust played factor, as Gunderson used the fine Oregon sill to spray Spangler and hold (he 125cc Pro back. Spangler rode extremely fast, holding 0(( the 250s of Whelchel and Church. The duo picked 0(£ numbers of riders to move into third and fourth, until Russell's Honda blistered through the whoops LO pass them and move in on Spangler. Russell caught Spangler at the half, and went after Gunderson, who looked to be a sure winner. Gunderson and Russell battled back and forth for the lead. Gunderson controlled the spot until the last lap when encountering problems - and Russell, who possibly would have caughtthe Pro anyway, inherited the lead. Gunderson waved Spangler by first, then also let Whelchel and Fox around to finish fifth after Church took him coming down home stretch. Russel rode superbly, winning the moto with ease after Gunderson's demise but Whelchel's 2-2 finishes took the overall. Russell went 4-1 for second and Church (1-4) third. ; a: o (.J ~ e >CD '0 ,~ Results OPEN INT: ,. 8ryan Reader (Yam): 2 Mike Hal· brook (Husl: 3. Gary Bever (Vam). OPEN JR: 1. Terry Bennett (Hus); 2. Davis dumps plaster, goes faster at CMC Ascot MX By Tom Corley John Devis (159) end Mike Mclain fight for the 125cc Intermediete leed et Ascot. Devis won both motos for the overell. GARDENA, CA, JUNE 13 Ten days before at Indian Dunes, DMC rider John Davis crashed badly and broke his arm. Anxious to race again, Davis hacked off the plaster and proceeded to win the I 25cc Intermediate class in tonight's Continental MoLOspon Club motocross at Ascol. Davis had to play catch-up in the first round. Mike McClain took the lead at the start ahead of Mark Wood, Michael Overby and Davis. Through the TT sweeper Davis took third place away from Overby but then lost that position by the next turn. On the' next lap the lead changed hands as McLain went too wide on the TT sweeper and .allowed Wood LO take the lead, but they collided with each other as they rounded the finish turn and dropped LO the ground. The new leader was Overby followed by Davis and Darin Motoda.1t soon was a twa-man battle between Overby and Davis, who was trying everything to slide by. The race had an exciting conclusion as Overby and Davis came side by side LO the finish line. Davis crowded Overby and caused him to drop his bike! Davis took the victory while Overby pu hed· his bike through for second ahead of Motoda and Wood. the final moLO Davis improved from a fourth-place start to take second. The leader was once again McLain who was just a couple of bikelengths ahead of Davis. Over the set of triple jumps the lead changed hands as Davis flew past McLain. Overby was yet another who wanted past McLain and soon he took over econd position, with McLain dropping back to sixth place. Wood placed third over Danny Tinsman. With an injured arm and poor stans, Davis beat the odds and LOok the overall victory. Overby landed second place with a pair of seconds. Third went to Wood who held a 4-3 tally over Motoda's 3-5. Gray sweeps Cycleland ST By David James CHICO, CA, JUNE 16 Kenny Gray had another outstanding performance Saturday night at Moural Associates' Cycleland Speedway. Gray flew his John Mason/JMI Racing/Smith Painting/ABCO Business Forms Honda into command on the fir t lap, while the rest of the 250cc Experts were hu£fling for a position. After the first lap, it was single file with Gray on top, Oroville's Mike Gresham in second, followed by Bill Rogers and Dave Kerr, running fourth. Honda-mounted Roger clo ed in on Gresham at the halfway point, while Gray stretched his lead. Gray went on LO win his fifth 250cc Expen main event win at Cycleland, with Gresham taking second in front of Rogers. The racing of the night was nothing but wheel-LO-wheel dicing in the 500cc Expert main evenl. The tart had two rows of racers roaring inLO the first turn. Each position seemed unpredictable, but the frontrunners LOok early command. Honda-mounted Walt Bevins jumped into the lead with Honda-mounted Randy Freeman inches away. The twO riders diced the entire 10 laps, making it a two-man show. Bevins had the lead for the first three lap, until, on lap four, he got off the groove in turns one and two. Freeman took advantage of the opening and he shot ou t of turn two into the lead, It stayed that way until lap six, when Freeman almost high-sided entering tum one, Bevins got the lead, and Freeman regained his balance and was again hot on Bevins' rear tire. On the firtal lap, the two racers pas ed the white flag, with Freeman gelling it firsl. Suddenly, Bevins stuffed Freeman going into turns one and two and made it stick. He tayed on the inside groove coming 0(£ turn four for the checkered flag. Both riders grabbed hands after the finish in portsmanship as the fans were on their feel. Results 250 NOV: 1. Spokane speedster smokes Hueffer TT By Clay light COEUR 0' ALE E, 10, JUNE 14 Eastern Washington's Ron Yamamoto rode his Honda 500 Lo impressive Open and 500cc Expert main event wins at Huetter Speedway' three-eighths mile TT, beating rival Arney Wick. Rusty Yamamoto made it a family sweep of the Expert mains, winning the 250cc portion of the program on the return of Huetter peedway, which like many races in the nonhwest, were rained out last week due to heavy summer rains. Rusty Yamamoto out-ran the 250cc Expens on the finest night of racing in the young 1984 season in Coeur d' Alene, beating AMA Novice Tracy Collins. Brother Ron decided LO keep the family tradition up and smoked off the line in the 500cc Expen main over Tim Stults (Suz), and Richard Hayman (Hon) and Wick. Rusty YamamoLO (Mai) held down fifth in the early stages, but was quick to rally to third after pUlling away Stults and Hayman. Wicks and Yamamoto clashed up front with their heavy artillery, but it was to be Yamamoto's night and the Spokane speedster took his first main event of the evening. Wick, however, was to get his first of his two runner-up laurels so he couldn't put the clamps on runaway Ron. Third went to Rusty and Stults 31
