JUNE 23 Mickey Fay came home to Washington after a rained-out Hinsdale, Illinois, TT National to take the Expert· main event at Caslle Rock. The national was lO be Fay's Team Harley-Davidson debut on the ailing Jay Springsteen's machine, but Fay would have to be content with another win in the Nonhwest, beating Charlie Barkman. Chris Fitzhugh (Seaule Hon/Lynwood. Yam/Old Country Kitchen Hl?n) demolished the Junior main event and Clay Clark clobbered the Novice main event on the C and C EnL/Montesa WesllYamaha Store-sponsored Yamaha. Clark hooked up nicely lO lead the opening lap Novice main event parade ahead of Mark lilian (Hon), Many Zirbel (Yam), Alben Eschwig (Hon) and Jeff Still (Yam). Illian faded back in the pack, allowing the furious ZirbellEschwig batlle lO break free from an early pack that consisted of Still, Kenny Wheaton (Hon), Keith Barnhardt (Hon) and Pete Jorgenson, who made the main for the first time on his 31st binhday. Up front there was nothing anyone could do at stopping Clark. Eschwig held Zirbel back for the first eight laps in the 10-lap main. Zirbel ovenook Eschwig on the last lap, and kicked in an afterburner to dose within three bilc.e1engths of Clark coming out of the final turn. Zirbel's best rally was to be denied, losing out to winner Clark by mere inches. Eschwig, Still, Wheaton and Larry fIoner filled out the top six. Ron Waters sat the pole position in the Junior main event on his Wee Wash/Ron Waters Sr.lPocketbooksponsored Honda 500 and surprised all, with a holeshot and a half to lead the 12 finalists through the TT's dog leg. Fitzhugh did get the lead coming 0(£ the jump and stole the show while Waters, Gary Trull (C-A), Terry Wahl (C-A) and' Dan Cordell (Yam) followed the sensational Junior. Follow was all they would do for 12 laps on the smooth ML SL Helens M.C.prepared course. Fitzhugh and Waters pulled away from Trull, who would drop back a notch when bumped by lJ)~!Ji.·~) (I )1)( It Thke afree test ride on the Nighthawk'· '8: Now through August 31.
