corner/table-top before the finish, Baur moved into second, bu~ just a few feet later Howard made a desparate attempt to repass over the finish jump and flew a wheel further to take second at the line. Howard's move paid off as he earned the overall with a 1-2 score ahead of Kordich's 3-1. Dunham finished the moto fourth and took third overall. In the Mini Expert class Mike Burdette (Pomona Valley Kawasaki/Scott/Malcolm Smith) took both motos over Ward Bassett (DMC Yam). Burdette won the fi·rst moto without too much trouble, but the second time out was a different story. Bassett pulled off a clean holeshot, but momen ts la ter the race was red flagged due toa first turn pile-up that involved Burdette. Although shaken, he limped back to his bike and made the restart, taking the lead on the first lap. Bas- _ sett moved in on the final lap but cOljld only get to within about three bikelengths at the finish. Results Ron Whitt leads Tom Watts in 260cc Beginner action at Corona. where riders rode for free in Rider Appreciation Night. , hard riding Ryan Fisher (C-A). Fisher and Frank Crane jr. (Hon) battled after a row-two start, but it was Fisher fastest through traffic and he settled into third as Fitzhugh prepared for yet another win. Waters, Fisher, Trull and Californian Larry Staggs (Yam) held down top five positions late in the race, and they held LO the flag. The Expert main event had Word siuing the pole, but a slip of the clutch and an appeal by Fay put Word on row three, joining jeff McDaniel and Wincewicz. Fay motored on his Ammco Tools/Hi-Point/BelRay/Marushin Helmets/York Motors Wood Rotax H-D to lead the pack around the nearly half mile track. jeff Barkman, Brad'Hurst and rookie Expert Duane Gerrard (C-A) followed the National veteran in the early portions of the 15-lap thriller. The Campbell/Barkman battle for second was joined by Hurst, who would be abruptly shut out by Barkman, who then put a spectacular move on Campbell to set out after Fay. Hurst eventually got around Campbell, who at this time rode in fourth ahead of Gerrard and Wincewicz. Hurst slingshot his mighty 750 Tri"umph by Barkman briefly to hold down a short-lived second, but Barkman took it back. Neither would be able to stop Fay, who went on to win easily. Campbell took fourth and Word fifth, after making the most sensational pass of the season to nab Gerrard coming across the line.. Results 30 EX MAIN: 1. Mickey Fay (H-DI; 2. Brett Berkman (KTM); 3. Free entries and $1000 in contingencies drew over 300 riders to Corona Raceway for Rider Appreciation Night. Answer Products, Malcolm Smith Products, Oakley, and Sports Tracks teamed up to sponsor the event, and riders overfilled the pit area as well as the Slarting lines. Each moto was a four-lap dash to accommodate the longer schedule and still get it done before the II p.m .. deadline. When the gate dropped for the first moLO of the 250 Novice Division I class, Honda-mounted Todd Kordich led a 1.4-rider pack through the first tum. Mike Howard (Yam) and Rob Dunham (Full Link/Suz) followed. On the second lap Yamaha-mounted Kon Baur moved in behind Dunham who held third behind Howard and Kordich and the top four proceeded to race around for the remainder of the lap within a few bikelengths of each other. On the following circuit both Howard and Dunham slipped by Kordich, and Baur dropped him to fourth win a mid-air pass seconds later. Baur's charge was quickly halted in the next turn due to a broken chain. As the white flag came out, Howard and Dunham began dicing for the lead with Kordich not too far behind. Howard fought off the attacks for the win and crossed the line a few feet ahead of Dunham. Kordich was third. In the second moto Kordich got the holeshot again as Howard and Bam pursued. Kordich quickly established a good lead and held it for the four laps to win·the moto by a comfortable distance. Baur spent the first half of the moto a few seconds behind Howard, but began closing the gap after completing two ,laps. At the final PEE WEE 9-: ,. Mike Metzger (Han); 2. Ban Phalen (Kaw); 3. Turner, Trone splifCMC Ascot Pro wins 'By Tom Corley GARDENA, CA, JUNE 20 As the third Wednesday of the month and it was the scheduled Continental Motosport CIub's Pro points event at Ascot. !'Radical Ron" Turner was out to clean up but only .tagged the 125cc Pro class win over Tracy Meeks and visitor Brian Myerscough. Rob Trone took the top cash in the 250cc Pro class over Turner, who failed to place well in the first moto. New Pro Mike Fedorow took the holeshot in the opening I 25cc Pro moto. Behind Fedorow were Tracy Meeks and Turner. The lead soon changed hands as Meeks swooped past Fedorow. It was then Meeks, Fedorow, Turner and Myerscough. On the same corner where Fedorow lost the lead, he dropped his bike on the next lap and feJl way Jw:k. My.ersco.ulth had.some momentary problems and both Eddie 'Gauley and Rick Atkins passed him, but soon he regained third. Meeks took his Pro-Circuit Honda into the final-moto lead ahead of Fedorow, Tim Rutherford and Turner. Soon Turner then Myerscough, flew past Rutherford and moved up to third and fourth places. Fedorow started out great, as in the first moto, but again couldn't hold back the competition. Turner and Myerscough advanced to second and third. Turner then flew past Meeks for the lead. Myserscoog.h also found a way past Meeks. Through the finish line it was Turner, Myerscough, Meeks and Atkins. Turner proved that Ascot is his track and his 2-1 finish won the contest. Meeks is now fully recovered from his Ponca City accident and his second proved that. Myerscough hasn't raced on a 125 in over a year yet placed third over Atkins. Craig Cable took the holeshot in the first moto of the 250cc Pro class. But it was Trone who worked upand took over the lead. Cable finished second ahead of Mike Nishita and Turner, who took one harmless fall. Turner came from fourth ta win the final moto, passing Cable, Trone and finally jerry Black. Trone won -overall with a 1-3 tally over Turner, Cable, Nishita and Pete Murray. Results so NOV 1/,: , . JUSlin Souza (Han); 2. Chris Gibb (SUl); 3. Val Reel (Kaw). SO NOV 1/2: ,. Myfhen magic at CMC Saylands MX By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, JUNE 20 Rich My then performed his magic for Baylands Raceway Park racers and fans when he out-tricked a very demanding course and out-classed five other professionals in the process. A back field start in moto one for Mythen (250 Suz) and Tony Flores (125 Yam) found the pair fighting their way to the front, one rider a lap, as early leader Craig Christian (125 Yam) faded. At the end of moto one Flores prevailed; My then and Christian trailed in that order. Moto two saw Flores last out of the gate while My then was out of the gate like a hare. For half the moto Christian was the challenger but Mythen held. When Flores entered the front running trio it became a classic battle. At two laps remaining Christian dropped back but Mythen kept his small lead to the checkers for the overall victory. Mas! ~~~fuJJp~te.rid~ _
