TEri YEARS AGO ~ ~ Pat Hennen led a Yamaha sweep of the Senior Open GP class at an ACA road race at Riverside International Raceway, and also rode a Suzuki LO finish second in the 200cc Production race behind John Chermak. Adolph Weil scored a controversial 1-2 overall win on his facLOry Maico at the West German MXGP. The controversy came in the second moLO, where Wei I clearly jumped the gate, but the race was not red-flagged. Most displeased was Suzuki's Roger DeCoster, wbo,finished the first lap of that moLO in 15th and expecting the flag; as a result he was only able LO work his way to fifth by moLO'S end. Second overall went to second-moLO winner Gerrit Wolsink (Suz), with Willi Bauer (Mai) third. American Brad Lackey (Hus) put together eighth- and seventh-place finishes. The Dutch TT at Assen saw Yamaha's Kenny Roberts make his World Road Racing Championship debut in the 250cc class. Roberts was third in the early going, then broke Mike Hailwood's lap record as he moved in to contend with leader Walter Villa (H-D). Roberts crashed trying for the lead, remounted in second, but with a broken fairing he was eventually relegated to third by Yamaha rider Bruno Kneubuhler. In other action Yamaha's Giacomo Agostini won the 350 , and 500cc classes. Yamaha's Pierre Karsmakers won both rounds of the Salt Lake City, Utah, round of the lnter-AMA Series. Rex Staten put his works Honda into second with a 2·4 tally, and CZ factory rider Zdenek Velky rounded out the winner's circle with a 4-7. Much of the action was off the track when a brush fire broke out above the course and consumed several cars. In a Semi Pro half mile in San Jose, California, Bultaco pilot Alan Wood defeated Suzuki rider Ricky Graham to win the 250cc Experi class. The 360cc Expert win went to Yamaha rider Steve Eklund. Geboers won the first moLO and finished second LO CZ's Jaroslav Falta in the other. Second overall, however, went to Puch rider Harry Everts with a pair of fourths. American Jim Pomeroy was on the DNF list with gearbox troubles. The third round of the AMA National Observed Trials Series, held near Seattle, Washington, fell LO Montesa rider Marland Whaley. Series points leader Don Sweet of New York finished second on a Yamaha, with northern California's Steve Darrow third.
