' Points leader Andre Malherbe (21 couldn't hold off the charge of GP runner-up Ricky Johnson, ---....---- Carlsbad, Honda factory rider Andre Malherbe from Belgium, rode a very smart and conservative race to finish fourth overall and extend his series points lead over a new runner-up; Honda rider Eric Ge.boers. Malherbe has 256 points, while Geboers' fifth overall boosted him to 232 points. Britain's Dave Thorpe, riding a works Honda, didn't have as good an outing with an 8-10 combination for sixth overall. He now lies third in the points with 229. "I didn't do too good, bu t 1 did get points," said Thorpe la ter. The only bright spot for Honda was the runaway win by Ron Lechien in 250cc Support class. Lechien easily topped both motos, while Yamaha's Keith Bowen fini~hed second. International SOGee World Motocross Championship Series: Round 8 Glover, Johnson .-3 at Carlsbad USGP By Kit Palmer CARLSBAD, CA, JUNE 24 Yamaha's Broc Glover finally did it: He won the American round of the 500cc World Motocross Championship Series at Carlsbad, as a 4-1 tally did the trick. For the past three 8 years, Glover was denied victories' at Carlsbad by slim margins, especially last year when Sweden's Hakan Carlqvist snatched the win from Glover by fractions of a second. "It feels great to finally get the win," said Glover afterwards. "I had a bad first moto so 1 didn't have to work so hard, which gave me a lot of energy left for the second moto." Glover's teammate Ricky Johnson also had a fantastic ride, but a few mistakes and bad luck kept Johnson from the overall win. A fading shock, a couple of crashes and an injured finger slowed the young speedster down. He posted a 3-2. Team Honda had a frustrating day. World GP points leader going ~~to Overcast skies kept temperatures low and the track muddy throughout practice, but by the time the first International moto got underway, the course was in excellent shape for the 24-rider field. Bailey put his Honda into the early lead, while Kawasaki's Goat Breker, Johnson, Malherbe and Belgians Eric Geboer~ and Andre Vromans, both Honda-mounted, pursued. Thorpe fell in the first turn and trai led the pack. Bailey q ulckJ y extended his lead to a couple of seconds'over Glover, who was having a tough time keeping Johnson at bay. Johnson kept applying the pressure until Glover gave in during the second go-around. But Johnson didn't last long in second; he soon crashed and dropped back to ninth. At the same time, O'Mara found a way around Malherbe for third, while Bailey stretched his lead to nearly five seconds over Glover. O'Mara was really on the gas as he started to reel in Glover in the matter of only a few turns. By the fifth lap, O'Mara had control of second but still found himself a slight distance behind Bailey. Malherbe also started to catch Glover and did so during the sixth lap. Soon after, Glover began feeling heavy pressure again from Johnson until the seventh round when Johnson slipped by.
