Ascot victory for Kopeczi-8ocz By Tom Corley GARDENA, CA, MAY 30 Gabor Kopeczi-Bocz out-rode the Veteran class in tonight's Continental Motosport Club motocross at Ascot Park to take a decisive victory. The Veteran and Old Timer classes were combined, and a good dice was seen between the eventual winners of each class - Gabor (Vet) and Les .Lollar (OT). At the sLart of the first moto, Lollar was in the lead, followed closely by Kopeczi-Bocz and other Veteran riders Jim Chapman and Don Anderson. On the second lap Kopeczi-Bocz closed the gap on Lollar to within one bikelength. Soon Kopeczi-Bocz made his move, and motored on to win in the combined contest. Chapman finished third in the Veteran class after Anderson worked his way past. In the final moLO the two classes mingled throughout the top positions even more so than in the opening round. This time Kopeczi-Bocz LOok the holeshot and never allowed Lollar to get within striking distance, and Lollar held 0(( everyone else. There was a good battle going on for third place between Anderson and Robert Dahlgren. Two wins earn<:d Kopeczi-Bocz the Veteran win. Anderson placed second witha2-20ver Chapman's 3-3. For the Old Timer class, Lollar swept the race for the top prize. A pair of seconds earned Dahlgren second position. Michael Robbins went 5-3 for third overall. The 500cc Junior and Intermediate riders competed at the same time. Don Pastell of the Junior class led everyone wi th the start of the first round, including Intermediate rider Scott Piper and Junior rider Ollie Senechal. The only obsLacle that Pastell had was lapped riders which allowed Piper to advance slightly. Pastell had the jump on everyone in the final round. A battle developed for serond place between Senechal and George Collins of the Intermediates. Senechal started to fade and allowed Collins to Lake over second. - Soon Piper was on the move and worked past Collins to become the runner-up to Pastell. Two first place wins earned Pastell the overall win in the 500cc Junior class. Senechal was second ahead of Rick Merrill. Piper .topped the Inter, mediates with a I-I tally and Collins was second with a 2-2. Results BO NOV 1: 1. Jim Wetkin. (Hon); 2. Derren Fredrickson (Kswt, 3. Julio Mirande (Hon). BO NOV 2: 1.
