"'alherbe edges Thorpe in West Germany BEUERN, WEST GERMANY, JUNE3 The seesaw battle for the top spot in the World Championship points table took another twist at the West German GP with Honda's Andre Malherbe wresting the top pot from teammate Dave Thorpe. Malherbe's 1-2 day gave the former World Champion the points he needed to edge Thorpe from the lead although only one point now separates the two, 192 to 191. Thorpe's mota tally read 2-3 for the day. . Early series leader Georges Jobe, racing with an injured ankle, was in the thick of things in both motos. Kawasaki's Jobe ran third in the first moto and fourth in the second for a strong showing. However, the third spot on the victory ro trum was taken by the third member of the Honda factory team, current 125 c World Champion Erik Geboers. Crashes in moto one dropped the diminutive Belgian to fifth, but he charged back in moto two to lead the field home. Thorpe grabbed the early lead in moto one and opened up a nearly I O-second advantage by the end of lap two. Honda rider Andre Vromans moved into second before a mistake dropped him back. MaLherbe then moved into second and began whittling away at Thorpe's 12-second lead. Malherbe caught Thorpe around midway through the mota and the two began a wheel-to-wheel duel for the lead which lasted for many laps before Malherbe broke clear. Jobe, riding with a plastic boot to protect his injured right ankle, never took his feet off the pegs as he cruised to third, over 30 seconds behind the leaders, yet well clear of fourth place Vromans. Geboers, after three crashes, battled hack to finish fifth. Geboers, with a change to tires better suited to the dry track, sprinted away [rom the field in moto two with Malherbe and Thorpe in tow. Malherbe stayed close [or a few laps until he hurt his back after a hard landing 0[[ one of the numerous jumps. He then began to drop back while Thorpe charged in hopes of snatching second. Malherbe got his second wind and picked up the pace, but was no threat to Geboers. Thorpe couldn't break out of third place and Vromans, tiring badly in the closing laps, lost fourth to Jobe.
