Voices (Continued from page 2) Endurance Race at Willow Springs on June 9th and 10th. The event was well organized and ran flawlessly. We would also like to thank Team Hammer for their idea to use special reflective tape on the track for night-time visibility. This helped make the race a safe one, in fact the ambulance never had to roll. At first, we were apprehensive about racing a 24-hour road race, but havingdone it we have to say it wa absolutely great. There is a special kind of pride and satisfaction that goes with this kind of racing. It i something that all road racers should try. We hope to see a lot more teams next year. Thank you again for a great race. TOM HICKS Team Satyr Gardena, CA Team Satyr finished third overall in the 24-Hour West, on a Honda 500 Interceptor... Editor. penalties to anyone moving or altering trail or course markings; SBI887, which would allow operation of OHVs on designated highway segments for trail contin ui ty and access to fuel and supplies; and AB3688, the "Snow Park" bill that would create parking areas at recreational trail heads. We also took considerable testimony on our grants and cooperative agreements policies, which will be formulated by our September 28 meeting at Pismo. Most of the testimony was directed at the Pismo access problem. We have eight access routes, each with support and opposition. No one access will be perfect, and the choice will be a hard one. Our next meeting will be in San Diego July 27-28, our top priority will be to find an area for San Diego OHV enthusiasts to enjoy without a long drive. If anyone has questions about the Commission or the Green Stickie program, you can write to Michael Bishop, Chairman, OHMVRC, P.O. Box 2390, Sacramento, CA 95811, or call 805/965-9722. MICHAEL BISHOP Santa Barbara, CA OHMVRC update 12 As chairman of the California OffHighway Motor Vehicle Recreation Commission, I would like to bring you up to date on Commission activities. Atour May 18 meeting in San Jose, we welcomed long-time OHV enthusiast and AMA officer Ed Waldheim into our ranks. With the reappointment of Yamaha of San Luis Obispo owner John Motley, OHV enthusiasts have a majority bloc on the Commission. The most important support the public can give the Commission is to keep their OHVs registered. Our latest statistics show only one in three OHVs currently registered. The return on the bi-annual $15 fee (63 cents a month) i tremendous: you help to fund property purchases, development and operation of OHV areas statewide. One of the common misconceptiqns about the fund is that we just go out and buy whatever land we find for sale. I wish it were that simple. Due to the many checks and balances within this system, up to 50% of the fund is set aside for grants applied for by local agencies or other government units. The process by which users can take advantage of the fund is fairly simple, but virtually unknown. As an example, if a group of riders has a special place that they go riding and have used it for some time, with the permission of the owner, they they have built a traditional use pattern for that area. As such an area, it is likely to qualify for funding at some level. If it is BLM or Forest Service land, approach the district recreational supervisor and be sure he knows about the Green Stickie Fund and the money available to him for trail conservation, signs, rehabilitation and other projects to "£urther OHV recreational opportunities. If it is private land, then cities, counties or other local agencies can apply for money. The point is, that with 50% of the Fund, we can only distribute money that is applied' for by government units, through grant programs. In other action, the Commission honored American Honda, Rocky Cycle and Bassani Manufacturing for their contributions to OHV programs, safety and other worthwhile concerns. The Commission also voted to support three bills pending in the legislature: ·SBI476~ whieh would invoke More WERA 24-Hour West In the June 20 issue's report on the WERA/Dunlop 24-hour endurance race held at Willow Springs, you had me - on the Honda of Gardena 500 Interceptor - third place overall after the first hour. Actually we were in second place overall. I would like to thank Team Hammer for getting reflective tape put on each side of the entire track which made it much safer for racing through the night. I would also like to thank WLT Racing and Honda of Gardena for giving me the opportunity to ride their bike in the race, and Richard Franklin of Spectro Oils for helping the team. DOUG TOLAND Buena Park, CA Hard-working Code Enjoyed your Keith Code success story. Being his friend and number one fan for 12 years, it's been fun watching him make something work tha t he believed in from the start. I'm also grinning at Keith proving to the doubting Thomase that the Superbike School would work. I still remember the free lessons Keith gave myself and others at Griffith Park, Stunt Road and Angeles Crest. Keith is working damn hard at keeping American road racing alive. I wish others in the industry would work as hard. 'DBA National Championship Drag Racing Series: Round 3 Vance sets new IDBA records ONCINNATI, OH, JUNE 17 California's Terry Vance set both ends of the IDBA Pro Stock record on his Byron Hinesbuilt Kawasaki KZIOOOELR at Edgewater Sports Park in Cincinnati. At the same race, Hines won the IDEA tech committee's Most Innovative Professional Entry award for the beautiful Vance & Hines twovalves-per-cylinder racebike. Vance qualified quickest at 8.48 and went on to set both ends of the class record at 8.48 sec. and 156.52 mph. Qualifying among the 16 bikes was very tight and in such cases it's not unusual for riders to try and cut the green light on the christmas tree. Larry Cook, Pete Barnhart, John Mafaro and Earl Timmons took themselves out of competition via the red light route in the first round of eliminations. Vance blew Steve Tartaglia away with Cook's red light advancing Terry Ausmus. Russ Nyberg and Gary Watters each took wins on red lights by Barnhart and Mafaro. Dave Schultz trailered Randy Mason while Timmons gave a free pass to Harry Lartigue. Mike Keyte dusted off Frank Murphy and Jesse Gatlin cut a good light to clip Barry Kogut's wings. In the second round the red light got Gatlin when he couldn't repeat his previous trick and Superbike Mike won their pass at 9.72/117.95 to Gatlin's 9.05/146.10. Watters punched out Nyberg at 8.711149.75 to 8.84/ 147.54while Schultz topped Lartigue at 8.42/141.95 to 8.94/142.40. Vance walked away from Ausmus at 8.59/ 152.80 to 9.111143.08. In the semis, 'Vance crunched Watters at 8.63/153.06 to 8.82/148.51 and _ ..Kerte.Jaid a. handful on Schulu..at 8.92/147.29 to 9.00/142.63. Vance knew he had Keyte covered in the final so he took it easy off the line. Out of the gate Keyte had a full bike length on Vance before you blink and then - it was like a Roadrunner cartoon. Vance took off like a rocket and became a blur as he passed Keyte. Vance was the winner at 8.549/ 154.37 to Keyte's 8.849/149.75. The first round of the eight-bike Funny Bike field saw first alternate Larry Knight, in for Bobby Baker, get trounced by top qualifier Terry Kizer at 7.90/175.78 to a troubled 9.28/ 145.39. Bo O'Brochta bested Steve Mileswitha 7.95/169.81 to 8.30/152.02 while Bernard King, who's used to winning, got his plow cleaned by George Bryce with an 8.46/127.29 to King's problem plagued 11.57/69.33. Bob Malloy shot down Charles Israel at 8.11/161.29 to 8.18/161.29. That last pair of mph figures is correct. The human eye could not detect the difference between Malloy and Israel at the finish. In the semis, Kizer nailed O'Brochta by a hair at 7.811177.51 to 7.85/172.41 and Malloy got" left at the gate by Bryce at 8.02/166.35 to 8.21/159.55. Kizer, on the R.W. Motors/Race Design/MTC/Mr. Turbo/Bill Hahn Products/KMS/Falicon Performancesponsored Kawasaki, made his first trip to winner's circle in a long time with a greased lightning style run against the Star Cycle &: Machine/ Wiseco/Cam Motion Suzuki of Bryce. Kizer's 8.JII.175.'Z8 easily blistered Bryce's 8.46/127.29. •
