first automobile manufacturing facility of a Japanese automaker in the United States. Early this year, Honda of America, Mfg., Inc., announced a $240 million expansion of its automobile plant which, when completed, will double the facility's output to 300,000 uni ts per year by 1988. In August, 1983, American Honda announced the establishment of Honda Power Equipment Mfg., Inc., the first company unit outside of Japan to manufacture lawn mowers. The 10 million plant is located in Alamance County, North Carolina, and will begin production this summer. In early 1984, Honda of America Mfg., [nc., announced that it had selected Shelby County, Ohio, as the site for a 30 million motorcycle engine production plant and that it was studying the production of automobile engines as well. [n 1959, the fledgling enterprise sold fewer than 200 motorcycles. In 1983, American Honda sold more than 700,000 motorcycles, scooters and ATVs; 400,000 automobiles; and 250,000 units of some 40 different power equipment products. The Honda manufacturing arm, Honda of America Mfg., Inc., has reached full production capacity of 150,000 cars per year and will produce more than 70,000 motorcycles this year. Other American Honda ventures: Honda International Trading Corporation, formed 1972 to export Amerioan goods to Japan. Utilizing the Honda fleet of five ships, as well as American vessels, H.l. T. exports include cattle, agricultural products, aluminum and other goods. Calhac, Inc., Cerritos, Calif., formed 1978 to assemble air conditioning units for Honda automobiles. Utilizing a significant amount of u.s. parts, the company is assembling units for three Honda mode/lines sold in the U.S. (Civic, Accord, Prelude).
