AMA opposes 55 mph national speed limit WESTERVILLE, OH, MAY 25 Following the overwhelming re ponse of it members, the American Motorcycli t Association has adopt d an official position oppo ing the 55-mph nalional speed limit and advocating lhatthe power to set maximum speed limits be relurned to state governments. Thi action comes as a resull of two recent edilorials on the national speed limit in the AMA's monthly magazine, American Motor yclist, the lalleI' of which requested that members lel the Association know their feel- ings on the peed limit. Those responses were featured in the. magazine's June issue, wi lh 92 percem of lhe more than 600 respondents opposing the [ederal government's reluclance LO return speed-limit jurisdiction LO the states. Faced with an Arab oil embargo, the federal government in 1974 took away the states' power LO et speed limit and declared a naLional 55mph maximum in an attempt to ave fuel. By larry lawrence WE TZVILLE, OH, MAY 26-27 Quester/Sullivan Racing, with Mike Harlow and Jerry Holm riding, turned in 445 laps on the 2.8-mile Mid-America Race- 20 way circuit to take a close win after six hours over Team Wankel' in the second round of the series. It was the team's second overall win aboard their Arai/Bassani/Dunlop/Lockhart/Weigl-sponsored Suzuki GSIIOO. Team Po Folks grabbed the lead on the stan over Quester and Wankel', and stayed out front for the first hour. Going into the second hour the Po Folks Kawasaki began to develop a wobble in the back end."1 was going down the front straight, turned around and saw the back wheel vibrating wildly," said a dejected Dale Burroughs. Po Folks tuner Tommy Stearns discovered a problem with the rear hub and manager Bill Trowbridge called it quits. The race boiled down LO a tralegy game - should Quester slow down LO preserve their rear tire or change the tire and ride harder [or the remainder of the race?
