Church cruhed; Adamo won. 10 Don Greene led a six-rider freight train as the first lap ended. Greene, the pole siller, had Brunson on his tail, followed by Yamaha riders Dale Franklin, Dave Busby, Joey Sommers and Alan Labrosse. Sam McDonald, who bogged the engine on his Honda on the stan, had carved his way through traffic to ninth. McDonald retired on lap two with suspected ignition problems before Franklin took over the lead only to hand it to Brunson. Santiago Londono moved into eighth by lap four with John Williams and Tracy DeMuro rounding out the top 10. On the fifth lap, it was Franklin back in command over Brunson and Sommers. Labrosse, Steward and Greene were bauling for founh in a tight race. The halfway flags saw Brunson over Franklin by one bike-length with the two opening some ground on Sommers in third, while Greene and Steward were locked in a tight formation for founh and Labrosse was staying within striking distance. Franklin came right back for the lead on the next lap with the top six positions holding. Busby ran seventh, followed by John Williams, DeMuro and Londono. Franklin opened up the biggest lead of the race as the field got the five laps to go sign, with about 15 bikelengths separating him from Brunson. Greene was coming back strong and was in third over Steward and Sommers. Brunson opened up over a second on Franklin in the final four miles to take the victory, his arm outstretched and waving to all as he took the checkered flag. The baule for third also went away as Greene opened up some distance on Steward. Sommers led Busby and Labrosse, with WjI1iams just edging DeMuro for ninth in a close finish. "The gusting wind was really scary, especially in turn one." said Brunson. "My sponsor, Mr. A.A. Harper of San Marcos, Texas, will be really happy to hear about my victory." "It was a mauer ohop speed," said Franklin about his second place finish. "Kevin had it where it counted, but I don't feel bad because we had a good race Itoing on. I'd like to thank Renton Yamaha and Dave Harold of Motorcycle Works for their help." "I've been having a hard time this year," said Greene. "When you do your own tuning and everything else it makes it hard to concentrate on the racing. My strategy was to let things son themselves out and then charge, but John and Kevin got away and I couldn't catch them. There are a lot of people behind my program and I want to thank them all for their assistance." • Results 1. Kevin Brunson(ArmI; 2. 00.0 Fronldin (Yoml; 3. Don Greene (Yom); 4. Adamo piled up a one minute lead in the IO-Iap feature. Harry Klinzmann rode to a lonely second, with Tony Guest taking third over Devin Bauley and Dave McClure. Defending Series Champion Adamo, aboard the Team Leoni Cagiva, grabbed the lead off the start with Harley-Davidson Owners Groupsponsored Church right behind. Church closed as the front-runners drew away from the BMW-based MKM of Harry Klinzmann beginning lap two. Syd's Cycles-sponsored Ducati rider Malcolme Tunstall followed ahead of the HTWT BMW of Devin Battley. The rest of the field stretched out behind with Tammy Kirk, making her road racing debut on a Robison Harley-Davidson-sponsored Harley, about mid-pack. Church's ride almost didn't come ~bout a~ he broke the primary chain m the fmal practice session and did enough damage to run out of parts. The items needed arrived from the Harley factory in Milwaukee in time for repairs. Kirk also had problems and was running her Harley XR750 mile engine after pUlling a rod through the cases in the original X~ 1000 engine in Friday's practice. Khnzmann was another rider who struck problems, but solved a handlingltransmission malady before the final. The positions held through the halfway point at lap five. Kirk was running a steady race in 12th before dropping back with brake troubles. Mark Mercadante, aboard a Ducati, held down sixth and first in the Lightweight Modified class with Harleymounted Will Roeder in ninth, leading the Stock class. Positions in the top five didn't change to the finish. Winner Adamo held a one-minute edge on Klinzmann. Guest, in third, took the Heavyweight Modified win while Mercadante, in sixth, held for the Lightweight Modified victory. Eighth place Roeder was the Stock class winner. "I like racing on fast tracks and that's what Road America is," said Adamo in winner's circle. "Reno Leoni builds me a strong bike so I just go out and run hard. We didn't have any luck in the first two rounds this year, butlthink that has changed now." "My race was pretty boring," said Klinzmann. "It got lonely oUlthere. I only had one problem and that was I forgot to charge the bauery before the race and the bike was running slower and slower at the end. Krauser, Arai and Champion help me out." "I don't get to make that many races so when I do I have to to the best I can," said Guest. ''I'm really happy about taking third overall and winning my class. Kevin Braden, my partner, really helped out a lot." Fi"ery/Cee'en top RA chair battle ELKHART LAKE, WI, JUNE 10 The team of Ian Fillery and Brian Ceelen rolled to an easy win in the eight-lap Sidecar final. Ron Thorne, with passenger John Dougherty, took second away from a slowing Bruce Lind and Jack Han on the final lap. Lind/Hart came on strong in the opening four laps, pulling out to a 15-second lead before striking problems and losing the lead to Fillery/ Ceelen on the fifth lap. As the new leaders stretched out their advantage, Lind/Hart saw their second place position become insecure as they continually slowed while Thorne/ Dougherty were on the gas and thirsting for the kill. Halfway through the final lap, Thorne/Dougherty caught and pased the ailing Lind/Hartenrry and the top three were set. The t~m of John and Arthur Daily ran a solid fourth for the entire race. "I was afraid we were going to run out of gas on the last lap," said Fillery. "Luckily, we didn't. It feels good to win the race two years in a row." "We had some problems on the final lap," said Ron Thomas. "John apparently got heat prostration and I had to hold onto him the entire last lap. In addition, I think he slipped and got his hand run over. He's going to be all right, but he went to first aid to gel looked at." "Our jinx at Road America continues," said Lind. "We were out in the lead just cruising and the entire braking system, front and rear, went away. We tried our besllo keep up the pace, but without brakes it wasn't easy." • Results 1.
