Green strikes at Sidewinders IT By Clay Light CLACKAMAS, OR, JUNE I Randy Green once again breezed to the Expert main event at Sidewinder's AMA Professional TT on his N-D/Bel-Ray/Simpson/ Hi-Point/Pro Fuel/Lillie-sponsored Honda 600. Green held National number 20 Brad Hurst at bay for his second win in a row in Clackamas. Hurst came from dead last on the KRWlOut Front/Pro Fuel/Panther Frames/Castrol/Blomfeldt Triumph 750 to nab second from Wood-Rotaxmounted Mickey Fay late in the main. Chris Fitzhugh (Seattle Honda/Old Country Kitchen/Lynnwood Yamaha-Honda) soared to the Junior win in a close contest over Robert Horban. Jack "Bugsy" Booth topped the Novice main on a 500 Harley-Davidson thumper. Booth wasted very little time getting into the lead and from the very start of the 1O-lap Novice main, and looked to be riding above par on the choppy, dusty TT course. Bob Klum and his 500 Honda rammed from behind ahead of Jim Dunken (Han). Dunken faded back into mid-pack. letting Taylor through traffic and nab the third position. closing in fast on Klum and leader Booth. Marty Zirbel flew through the pack to follow Taylor and settle into fourth, dumping Randy Roose to fifth, which would set the final finish order. Fitzhugh came up with a holeshot to lead the Junior's 12-lap main event. He was feeling the heat from last year's Novice sensation Robert Horban. Horban hounded Fitzhugh the entire main event, but the Grants Pass rider would have the door shut every time he attempted to steal the show. Danny Cain (Han) rode in early third but dropped off the pace, allowing Kirk Howard to move into the vacated position on a 750 Yamaha. Howard was also dropped back when pressured by McGonigal. Californian Danny McDonnell (Han) moved into the top five late in the race. Positions stayed nearly the same 'for the remainder, until McDonneJl moved to fourth over Cain and Ryan Fisher (CA), who were a considerable distance behind winners Fitzhugh and Horban. John Wincewicz sat the pole position on the National number 55 Triumph and raised his fists with confidence at the staging of the Expert's 15-lap swapfest. Wincewicz led the initial lap, but was threatened by Green's Honda. In the early going, Wincewicz's choice of lines gave Green problems. Barkman, Fay and McCullough made it a National numbers parade until Barry Pelkey (C-A) moved into sixth on the Megacycle Cams Can-Am. Wincewicz finally yielded to a tricky Green, then was faced with holding off long-time rival Fay. Green moved into a lonely lead. then Fay took Wincewicz by surprise on the inside coming down the hill to move into second while a Word/Barkman/ Campbell duel erupted behind the trio of leaders. Hurst, who started off dead last, caught the frontrunners sleeping, and nabbed Campbell, then Barkman and Word to move into fourth with three laps remaining. Hurst then set his sights on Wincewicz. who fell prey on the sweeping downhill. Hurst took Fay coming down the hill to place second behind Green. who was unstoppable. Results EX: 1. Griewe, Zitterkopf, Campbell claim Memorial Day GP at Corona By Nate Rauba CORONA, CA, MAY 28 Don Griewe, Greg Zitterkopf, and Todd Campbell survived the lOO-degree plus temperature towin the Pro classes at the ninth annual Malcolm Smith/ R.A.C.E. Memorial Day Grand Prix at Corona Raceway. KTM-mounted Griewe made winning the Open class look easy. Griewe took the lead from the start and never looked back. eastablishing a large margin by the end of the first lap. Gary Jones (Yam) and Angelo Ficarolta (Suz) battled over second for the first quarter of the race before Jones broke £lee and opened up a safe distance to take second. Ficarolta was a distant third. In the 250cc class Zitterkopf (Sinisalo/Kaw) also had an easy win. Brad McLeod (Han) was first off the line, but Dave Fernandez (Cycleworks/Suz) took the lead after a few corners. Zitterkopf passed them both on the first lap and was gone for good, setting a pace for himself that carried him past all of the Open line except for Griewe by race's end. Even Griewe almost fell to Zitterkopf's charge. Zitterkopf caught him right at the end, but went wide trying to pass in the final turn. "If it wouldn't have been so dusty I would have caught him," said Zitterkopf. The best race was in the I25cc class. Suzuki of Riverside's Gary Denton lived up to his reputation and charged into the first turn more than five bikelengths ahead of Steve Stewart (Team Green/Pomona Valley Kawasaki), Rick Maki (Answer/Kaw), and Todd Campbell (Kaw). Denton enjoyed a good-sized lead for the first lap until Maki caught up to him at the end of it. For the first half of the race Denton held Maki back, but mistakes cost him the lead. "I went of( the track about three times, which turned out to be three times too many," Denton said. Maki went on to lead much of the second half of the race, but couldn't hold out to the finish.
