Craig Lane, after winning the initial two motos of the lhreerace program at Spillway Park, crashed in the third to take a DNF. Lane had the holeshot for the last race of the AME-sanctioned event, when he lost control of his Honda coming off a jump on the first lap, and was literally knocked out. It was several minutes until he regained consciousness, but Lane was finally able to walk back to the pits, with the help of some friend. He did receive the overall win for the Open Intermediates, though. Chris Cockrum, on a Honda, outraced Mike Hawk's Suzuki in two of the three events to win the 250cc Junior class with a four point total. Hawks placed second with six points, and Paul Prochaska was third on another Suzuki. Frankie Lowers' Honda defeated the Yamaha of Lee Johnson in the Open Junior class. Curt Carpenter and Brad Beaman, both of Hondas, finished first and second, respectively, in all three of the 125cc Novice events. Results Vreeke takes fourth straight in Superbike Series By Lori Tyson ROSAMO D, CA, JU E 3 Jim Vreeke won the fifth round of the Willow Springs/American Road Racing Association Superbike Series, taking. his fourth straight victory. The Ontario Moto-Tech/ND/Arai/Dunlop-sponsored rider piloted his GPz750 Kawasaki to the lead in the first turn of the first lap and never looked back. Suzuki-mounted Jay Tanner pressured Vreeke a bit until lap six when the aftermarkel suspension linkage on Tanner's bike broke as he entered turn two and crashed. The bike cartwheeled in the dirt, but Tanner was unharmed. Another early contender for second, Earl Roloff, topped off what had to be one of his worst days ever with a third-lap crash in turn three. Roloff also walked away unhurt. Honda pilot Larry Shorts then inherited second place, but was soon plagued by the challenges of young upstart Todd Brubaker. Brubaker had just come from a record-breaking win in the 600 Super Street race, where he did 1:34.5 lap times on his Greg Lundry/John Mangan-tuned GPz550. Brubaker took that same 550into the Superbike race against the 750 machines; by the seventh lap he had passed Shorts, and took second at the end of the 1O-lap event. "Shorts kept cutting me off," said Brubaker afterwards. "I had trouble getting around him." Shorts took third over Mark Thomas, who battled race-long with Chris Mencher; Thomas protested the legality of Shorts' motor. Shorts won the protest; he was found to be legal. ''I'm glad he had me torn down," said Shorts. "That's an extra $50 for me to take to Elkhart. I'd like to thank my sponsors - Sounder of Long Beach, Russell, R.C. Engineering and Mikuni Carbs." The 250cc GP was a close race. 0-.''''''''49 911&. v Ihg/wfi,. who's used to winning easily. had broken a pipe earlier and had some jetting problems in the race. So when Mark Shelton showed up on a strange100kingSBR-Honda single, built with parts that looked like they came off a Buick, Biganski suddenly had hi hands full. The two battled all the way to the £lag, where Biganski used the draft to slingshot by Shelton, taking the win by inches. New Zealander Richard Scoular returned to wreak havoc in the 600cc Box Stock class, after last month's three surprising victories. Scoular led virtually £lag-to-f1ag and took his trophy by a healthy margin over the intense fight for second between Nigel Gale and Pete Carroll. Second-place prize was taken by Carroll after a tough dogfight and a last-minute drag-race to the line. Howard Monise took fourth on a borrowed bike in his first race in over a year (after a very bad crash in turn eight left him injured and in a cast for a long time). Monise also went on to take third in the 600cc Production. Results Fl: 1. Ste.. Bigenski (Yem): 2. Chris Mencher (Kew): 3. Mert<'Shelton (Honl. F2: 1. St... Biganlki (Yam): 2. Five for five for Young at Sunrise NMA qualifier By Tom Griffith ADELANTO, CA, JUNE 3 Nick Pounds of Sunrise Cycle Park hosted the third round of the National MOlorsports Association/Yamaha Grand National qualifying series today. The only perfect score was by Yamaha rider Chris Young riding the Stock and Modified Mini 12+ classes. Young stole the show as he manuevered his YZ80 into the first-place posi tion before the end of each of five different motos. The Stock class bested its usual large-sized field with nearly 40 machines snarling to do battle. Going into the final event with perfect two point qualifier scores, Young and David Noel were set for a shootout. But Young put on the heat early by grabbing the lead and Noel found the finish-line rockers too tricky and went down and out of contention finishing in 11th. Motooneof the Mini Stock Experts saw Suzuki's Mike Healey pull a firm holeshot but following on his tail was a first-class field with Kyle Lewis and Scott Brown second and third. At the tower, lap three saw Brown's Honda pull along side the Kawie of Lewis and dive over the doubles into turn one with second place secure. On the white flag lap, a distant Bob Moore became the pressing Bob Moore and mid-way in the lap moved inside Lewis for third and past Brown for second at the checker. Rounding out the pack came Hicks in fifth and Mike Kiedrowski in sixth. As the gate dropped on the second •• Mi!1j_SJ~1f ~_x~ngQ•.iJ_appeared to Stanley steams at Bellingham By Peter Nielsen BELU GHAM, WA, MAY 31 Rod Stanley holeshol the lOScc A class and immediately took control. He circled the nearly one-mile track in one minute, 39 seconds en route to the win. Danny Stanley, running in second, crashed hard in the eighth-lap, yielding that position to Rick Hammerjackson. Danny recovered to finish third. The 105cc B class, racing in the same moto, but starting in the second wave, showed the fans some good racing. Troy Doty, in third place, kept after Tom Dunn, who had second. In the sixth lap, he got around Dunn, but could not close on the leader, Brett Devries, who led from the start, showing poise and style on the double jumps. They finished with Devries in front, followed by Doty and Dunn. The 80cc A and B classes shared the same moto, running in two waves. Donny Stanley pulled the holeshot in the A class, and held a slim lead. Curtis Oaks, on a Yamaha, was pushing from behind, and took over first when Stanley slipped out on a turn. Oaks went on to win, with a good lead over Stanley, in second. In the 80cc B class, Brett Devries had his Honda cooking again, and was in command until lap nine, when he fell. Jay Chenier, who had worked up to second from back in the pack, took over the lead. Devries held on to second, with David Hellem finishing third. Results 1 SPEEO: 1. Michae' Hunnicutt (Yaml; 2.
