R80ST 13TH ANNUAL MONTEREY, CA. jU E 4 BMW will sell its new line of KlOO 987cc water-cooled fourcylinder street bikes and will continue with mailer air- CAMEL PRO SERIES NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP cooled Opposed Twins in the U.S. market. The introduction of the KIOO to America was moved up several months by a growing number of unauthorized imports of the machines, which were introduced in Europe and other pans of the world last year. There are three KIOO models, all powered by BMW's new horizontal Four: the standard KI00, the sporting KIOORS and the touring KIOORT. Discontinued from the line are the RIOO, R IOOCS, R IOORS and RIOORT 98Occair-cooled Opposed Twins. But the smaller 650cc air-cooled R65 and R65LS models remain in the lineup, along with the 797.5cc air-cooled R80ST, RSORT and RSOGS machines. The new four-cylinder engine, a single-plate clutch, a five-speed transmission, and a single-l gswingarm bolt tog-ether to form what BMW calls its Compact Drive System. The whole assembl y hangs from a space frame fitted with aerodynamic body components and a styling look that draws strong reactions pro or con. Despite the press introduction, actual deliveries of the K100 Fours are stalled by a metal-worker's strike, which has paralyzed BMW suppliers of castings and stampings, bringing production in BMW's Spandau, West Berlin factory to a halt. BMW officials hope the strike, (in which workers are demanding a 35hour work week with full 40-hour wages as a solution to unemployment in West Germany), will be settled by the end of june. When the sU'ike ends, production priority will be given to machines for tbe American market, the officials say, and the first shipments will be air-freighted to meet demand. BMW's New jersey headquarters already reports a long list of orders from dealers with customer deposits in hand. Look for a full test of the KIOO in an upcoming issue. • JULY 21, 22, 1984 LAGUNASECA RACEWAY Monterey, California fORMULA-l FOItMULA·2 TICKET ORDER ADVANCE PRICE NO. 13th ANNUAL CHAMPION SPARK PLUG 200 TOTAL Name Address Sunday Next week: Kl00 ent developll1 stOrY of and lots diOn!
