BY P4IP4I Wf4lLfY Honda's Andre Malherbe topped the sixth round of the 500cc World Motocross Championship Series in Beuern, West Germany. Malherbe won the first moto ahead of David Thorpe (Hon), GeorgesJobe (Kawl, Andre Vromans (Hon) and Eric Geboers. Geboers handily won the second moto, while Malherbe, Thorpe and Jobefollowed. Thorpe took second overall ahead of Jobe and Geboers. Malherbe jumps back into the points lead by one over Thorpe, 192-191. Jobe is third with 184, while Geboers is fourth with 167. Hakan Carlqvist, who has been sitting out most of the 500cc GP season with a broken thumb, is going to be fitted wtih a cast that will enable the '83 500cc World Champion to compete at the V.S.G.P. in Carlsbad, June 24. . Team Hammer won the WERAI Dunlop National Endurance Series Six-Hour held June 2 at Road Atlanta. Although they h~d as much as an eight-lap lead, Team Hammer finished three laps ahead after encountering electrical problems. Those teams running behind the leader and crashing included QuesterlSullivan, Po Folks Rac, ing, and enough other teams that the race was shortened to five hours. Team Husky's Mike Melton was the overall winner of the 125-mile, June 3 AMA National Enduro hosted by the Mt. Baker M.C. near Bellingham, Washington. Melton dropped 11 to take the eve Ill, two beller than tearnmates Dave Bertram and Terry Cunningham, who finished second and third. Kawasaki rider Jim Vreeke won his fourth straight in the ARRAI Willow Springs Superbike Series, run June 3 at the Rosamond, California, track. Vreeke, sponsored by Ontario Moto-Tech, Arai, NO and Dunlop, rode a GPz750. Se- With the Baja in Barstow 500km being run in Lucerne Valley, California, the team of Dan Smith and Dan Ashcraft took the overall win on a Team Husqvarna 500 Xc. Second overall, just seven minutes back, was the Bruce Ogilvie/Chuck Miller team, riding a Honda XR500. Tops in Class 21, on a Husky, were Dave Chase and Brell Howell, also third bike overall. They were followed by David Wasden and Ed Pierce, mounted on a Yamaha. Class 20, the 125cc bikes, was headed by Ed and Jeff Foland, riding for Cagiva Nonh America. The event, run on the modified Baja course, was a virtual runaway for Yamaha's Ricky Johnson. After an afternoon of racing, Johnson went home with both the 500cc and the Open Pro class wins. In the Open class, ATK-mounted riders Mike Baker and John Whelchel filled the top pay positions. Honda pilot Ron Gibson was the runnerup in the 500s, 'and Roger Hurd was third. With the exception of Gibson, Burnworth and LaPorte, all the other V.S. riders were members of Team Tamm. Randy Green, who is becoming recognized as a major flat tracking force in the northwest. won both the Sidewinders and the Castle Rock TT events this past weekend. At Castle Rock, Green made a move between both Frank Word and Mickey Fay coming out of the last turn of the last lap to take the win. Jim Bernard (Suz) topped the Funny Bike ranks while Terry Vance (Kaw) was the Pro Stock winner. Ray Bellucci (Kaw) won in Pro Comp with the Junior Pro win to Glen Richardson (Hon). In Washington's Gold Cup Series, Yamaha-mounted Jim Anderson took a double victory by claiming the top spots in both the 125 and 250cc classes. Cory Klaudt was the runner-up in the 125s, while Phil Larson followed Anderson across the line in the 250s. Mike Larson weill I-I for the Open class honors, and also took the third spot in the 250cc class. Sixteen-yearold Jeff Cl)apman was the runner-up in the Open class. Gary Scott, the 1975 AMA Grand National Champion and veteran of 12 Camel Pro Series seasons, is giving serious thought to this year being his last riding the full series. ''I'll be racing next year," said Scott, "bul as it stands now it won't be a championship effort. I'll ride selected Nationals and some local and Regional events. The racing in the Nationals has gotten to the poilll where a true privateer has a very slim chance of winning." Scott's last National win, the 19th of his career, came in September of 1982. Continental Motosports Club hosted their Four-stroke Nationals at Don Vesco, the fastest man in the world on two wheels, took time out from his duties helping David Aldana look' after his Suzuki RG500 during the Match Races in England last month to sample the seat of the latest British challenger to his motorcycle land speed record. British engineer Alex McFadzean, seen here with Vesco, took his Project Penetrator streamliner to Donington as part of a Heron Suzuki display. It's powered at present by a loaned RG500engine, with the promise of a turbocharged Yoshimura 11 OOcc engine in due course for tbe world attempt once the machine has proved itself in testing. Vesco was impressed with the design of the rail, in which he's lent a helping hand with advice and practical assistance. Project designer Chris Bladon spent a month working with Don in his California workshop last year before returning to Britain to complete design work on the Penetrator. But he and McFadzean will have stiff competition because Vesco revealed he's planning another record attempt in the near futurel Photo by Kel Edge. Scott Pearson, who keeps his right knee taped and wrapped as a constant reminder of last year's accident which did extensive damage to the inner workings, will have operations on both knees at the end of the season. "I can either have bad knees for the rest of my life or have both of them operated on now," said Pearson at Louisville. "That's the ultimatum my doctor gave me." "The Louisville Half Mile and the Saturday night Mile National at Indy are the two races I always want my riders to win. One down, one to go," said Tex Peel on Ted Boody's National win at Louisville. Ted Boody tried a Dunlop K391 R Sport Elite rear tire during a practice at Louisville. "The tire actually works fairly well on a black groove," said Boody's sponsor/ tunerTex Peel. "Ted qualified sixth fastest at the Sacramento Mile using one. It isn't a tire to use here at Louisville." The Dunlop is a soft-compound street tire.
