Gray takes close Cycleland STopener By David James CHICO, CA, MAY 12 The main event for the Money race wa the most exciting at Cycleland Speedway's short track season opener. Dale Hansen and his new Yamaha 250 water-cooler led of[ the stan for nearly twO laps with Mike Gresham and Kenny Gray pressuring wheelLO wheel. While Hansen stayed ahead, Gresham had Gray breathing down his back. Before Gray could put a move on Gresham, however, Bultaco-mounted Lowell Moural surprised Gray by passing him on the outside coming into turn three. Now it was Moural closing in on Gresham. Han en continued leading the race but not by much. On the fifth lap, Gray went into tum three hard. He managed LO get a wheel in front of Moural, forcing him o(f the groove, but Gray was on the gas moving closer LO Gresham. Suddenly, Gresham squeezed by Hansen down the back straightaway. It was a race to be determined on the last lap. Hansen wa again passed by Gray who now had a solid second position. The white nag was displayed and Gray was inches from Gresham as they came roaring out of turn two . Gresham tried to close the door on Gray, but Gray stayed with it. When they exited turn four, Gray had a nice drive LO take the victory and the money. Behind Gresham, Hansen held 0[£ Moural for third. Dave Kerr won the 250cc Novice main event. Kerr won his heat race LO give him pole in the main, but a bad stan sent him into second place be. hind Mark Cameron. On the second lap Kerr made his move on Cameron and led the rest of the way but other positions were hanging. Kawasaki rider Joey Bolen got by Cameron. Mason, White hot at NMA Canyon MX -By Sandy Berm PHOE IX, AZ, MAY 13 The temperature was over 100 degree for the National Motosports Association regional event and Arizona State MX eries rinale. Roben Mason and Bobby White were hot as well; the former taking the 250cc Expert class, the Janer finishng in the runner-up spot and taking the class Litle for the full series. The first moLO featured a holeshot by Honda rider Eric Kirk. Kirk led for three laps before yielding LO Honda rider White, and also Kawasakimoumed Chappy Blose. Shortly thereafter Mason, ridinga Yamaha, pa sed both Kirk and Blose to occupy second. White wemon LO win the mOLOahead of Mason, while Kirk reclaimed third from Blose and held it. In the econd moLO Dennis Parker had the lead of[ the tan, but White had the poim position before the end of the first lap. Three laps inLO the race Mason took over from White and wenton LO take theday'soverall win. White's second was good enough for the eries title. Third on the day was Kirk, who was runner-up LO White in the erie tandings. In the l25cc Expert war, Blose returned LO the track, swept both moLOS and LOok the series laurels. Although Team Green's Scon Keyes fini hed fourth behind Mason and Parker, he did take second in the series. Kawasaki rider Bryan Bruner dominated the first 125cc Modified Amateur lass, leading stan LO finish. hawn Kalos was second and hawn HilLOn LOok third. In the second moLO, Kalos was the leader righ t up to the last la p. IL was there he was passed by Roben Naughton and had to settle for second ahead of Bruner. Kalos and Bruner wound up tied on points, and Kalos' bener second moLO gave him the win over Bruner.
