Going inLO the first corner, Lynn Hyde and Eddie Poner were two-three right behind Molder, but in the following laps Molder ran away and hid, laping the entire field, except for Hyde. When the checkers flew, Molder took the moLO win with Hydeand Ponerfini hing two-three. Round two held more of the same for the Open Pros. Molder went out front early, and while Hyde tried to make a race out of it, there wa no serious challenge LO Molder's supremacy. The Honda pilot ran away with the second moLO and overall, again followed by Hyde and Poner. from Santa Fe, brought along his Suzuki RG500 to test the MRA' best. Rick Orlando pulled out his Honda VF750F, and the two went at it from the word go. Old led Orlando by a wheel for the first four laps of the 2.25 mile circuit. Orlando got around Old once, butthe sheer hor epower of the Suzuki prevailed. Turner seemed LO have third place nailed, but he couldn't see the furious battle for fourth boilin.1!; behind him between Ray Bolte (GPz750) and Mike Pettiford on a KZlOOOR. Turner's Ninja broke on lap six, opening the door for Pettiford's green bike. Old held off Orlando for first place, with Pettiford in third and Bolte founh. Results Results 125 PRO: 1. Wright, Harriger battle at Sacramento MX By "Nuclear" Neukam By Joe Day SACRAME TO, CA, MAY II PUEBLO, CO, MAY 6 While Hi-Point/Kawasakimounted Rodney Harriger scored both moto wins in the 125cc Pro class at Sacramento As the Mountain Roadracing Association opened its 1984 season, Honda's new VF500F promised to heat up the 600cc Production Class, and at the green flag, it did justthal. Aaron Turner on a GPz550, grabbed the stan and led for two laps, as Bruce Sass (GPz550) picked his way to the front. Danny Walker's GS450 and JT Terry's VF500F battled for fourth, but Walker began to leave Terry behind at the halfway point, setting his sights on Turner and Sass. From lap five on, Sass was to develop an unbeatable lead. Turner's second place gave way to Walker's charge on lap s-even. Turner ultimately took third, and Terry's Honda was fourth. CA, MA Y 6 Supersueet King Denny Doherty barely beat upstart Rich Oliver at Sears Point's pre-ProAm warmup race. It wasa battle of Kawasaki 900s, Doherty's original Z-I in Superbike trim against Oliver's Richmon-d Kawasaki Ninja, stock except for slicks.Nobody expected Oliver and the stock Ninja LO race with Doherty's big-bore Z, which has dominated AFM Open Superstreet all season. But Oliver shocked Doherty when he passed and LOok the lead almost immediately. Even more surprising was the fact that Oliver's Ninja had the drive off the corners, Doherty repassing on the brakes at the entrances to tighter turns, Oliver flying past again on acceleration. The race went down LO the last lap, when Doheny finally got enough room in the esses to hold off Oliver's usual charge out of turn II; and Doherty won. The pair had turned I ;54 lap times throughout the race. In the Open Twins race, closely watched as a preview of the upcoming AMA BoTT race, Mike Ross motored his lOOOcc Griuly Engineering Harley to a hotly conte ted win. It was the first outing in over six momhs for Ross and the Sportsterbased machine. When the green flag dropped, Elmer "Bud" Riddle wheelied through the first three gears on his Daly City Yamaha/Michelin Virago and took the lead, setting the from tire down just in time for turn one. Ross, Walter Andrews on a BMW and Michael Green on a vintage Triumph formed a roaring freight train close behind. The Yamaha held the lead through the first few turns, but the Harley showed superior power as Ross motored past Riddle coming out of the Carousel. The race settled down to a game of nip and tuck as the Yamaha would close in the tight and twisty sections, and then Ross would simply run away from Riddle as soon as the track straightened. Riddle closed on Ross repeatedly, often pulling alongside in the S-turns, but Ross always won the drag race from turn II to start/finish and took the win. Andrews, unable to catch the leaders, took third. The 750cc uperstreet race proved to be another warmup for the ProAm. with club champion Bernd Koegler on hi Walnut Creek Honda up against National Superbike rider Kerry Bryant, on his SuperTrapp Kawasaki, and Don Greene, in his first eason as a Superbike Expert. on a Yamaha eca prepared by Ken Augustine of Kinetic Analysis. Koegler took the holeshot and lead into turn one. Derek Wittorf, riding the SC Cycle alvage GS750, was at his rear wheel. At the end of one lap, Greene had the lead. with Koegler, Bryant and Wi tLOrf strung out behind. The order held for three laps. with only two seconds between first and fourth. The leaders then caugh t up with the Open class riders from the first wave and Greene left the rest of the 750s behind a he wove through the larger machines. Koegler and Bryant provided an exciting dice and Bryant. who was obviou Iy down on horsepower, kept trying LO find a way past Koegler. Winorf trying hard to keep up, retired when his oil cooler exploded. Greene took ·third overall, first in class. Koegler held off a spectacular attempt by Bryant for a last lap draft-and-pas LO take second. Results FORMULA I: 1. Denny Doheny IKaw); 2. Edwin Woo (Vaml; 3. Don Greene (Vam). FORMULA II: 1. McClain vacations at GNC round four at Conroe By Pete Sullivan CONROE, TX, APR. 29 Houston's David McClain dominated the 250cc and Open Pro action at round four of the GNC Texas Series. The Galveston Honda-sponsored 500cc National rider made a guest appearance in the series to capture both overalls with powerful come-from-behind wins in every moLO. Mr. Consistent, Dennis Hawthorne, posted two runner-up finishes in the 250cc Pros, followed by a quick Terry Tinney but neither proved LO be a match for McClain's superb physical conditioning on the grueling Conroe course. Team Green's Carroll Richardson was back on form, and back on top of the 125cc Pros, with consistent 2-2 finishes. Oklahoma's Dennis Daft and an always quick Kit Vick posted the molO wins, but the intense heat and the rough course kept them out of the winner's circle. Hawthorne continued collecting series points with
