LaPorte refuses Baja BMW Subtle hints: When 1983 500cc World Champion Hakan Carlqvist does testing on his works machinery, the moody Swede has a strange way of lelling his mechanics know when he is not satisfied with a change. Two years ago, Carlqvist was out testing after making a few changes to his Yamaha. He made a few laps, came back into the pits, parked his bike, sat down and didn't say a word. His mechanics didn't know what to think. Then Carlqvist got up, grabbed a shovel and started to dig a hole in the pits, still not saying a word. After digging a large hole, Carlqvist walked back to his Yamaha, rode it into the hole, got off and started to bury it with the shovel. His mechanics finally got the message. Honda's Andre Malherbe swept both motos of the French 500cc MX GP. the fourth round of the '84 ..ries, on Sunday. May 13, in Brou, Frence. Eric Geboers (Hon) was second overall with 2-3 moto performances, while Dave Thorpe (Hon) was third with a 4-2 score. American Danny laPorte (Yam) was sixth in the first moto, but DNF the second. Malherbe leads the point standings with 129, followed by Thorpe and GeorgesJobe (Kaw) who are tied for second with 124 points. Jobe was fourth overall in France with a 3-4 tally. KTM's Heinz Kinigadner won both motos of the Czech 250cc MX GP on Sunday, May 13, in Holice, Czechoslovakia. Kinigadner moved ahead of Gert-Jan van Doom (Suz) in the point standings, II0to94. Van Doorn picked up fourth place points in the event's first moto. Kidd says that the schools will cover both short track and TT technique. The first school will be for amateur riders on machines from 50 to 500cc, and it runs May 27. Former 250cc Motocross World Champion Danny laPorte failed to come to terms with BMW representatives and backed out of a proposed deal to race a BMW in Baja. L,aPorte, 27, of Ketchum. Idaho, held talks with BMW spokesmen, who wanted laPorte to share a BMW with three-time 125cc Motocross World Champion Gaston Rahier of Belgium in the 500-mile Baja Internacional off-road race in Baja California, Mexico June 2. Rahier, 35, won this year's 7000mile. 22-day Paris-to-Dakar rally on a 998cc shaft-drive opposed Twin four-stroke loosely based on the production R80 GS. Negotiations between laPorte and the BMW factory in West Germany apparently broke down at the last minute, when laPorte ran into strong objections from either the Yamaha factory or the Dutch Yamaha importer. Presstime reports on the exact source of the protests were unclear, but the objections were strong enough to make laPorte back out of the agreement. The factory is now considering several other world-class pilots to share the ride with Rahier. The factory will also enter a second machine, ridden by Baja veterans Todd Martella, 40, and John Watkins, 42, in either Cia.. 30 (for riders over age 301 or Cia.. 38 (for riders over age 38).
