Scoular scores three at Willow By Lori Tyson ROSAMOND, CA, APR. 29 Visiting ew Zealander Richard Scoular showed up at Willow Springs for the first time .and rode a borrowed motorcycle to 28 three victories, winning every class he entered and surprising the American Federation of Motorcyclists' best riders. In the 600cc Superstreet it was virtuallya two man race between Scoular and Todd Brubaker. Scoular, piloting a stock FJ600, appeared to have horsepower on Brubaker's tired GPz, but Brubaker made up for it in the corners and stayed gl ued to the Yamaha. Scoular was the winner by a small margin. Walt Nitto, plagued earlier by electrical problems was a lonely third. Scoular took an easy win in the 600cc Stock Production, pursued again by Brubaker. But when a backmarker caused Brubaker to crash in the sixth lap, Scoular took home another first-place trophy. Dave Sadowski, WaltNiuoand Ed Ragle got into a heated debate over second place with Sadowski crossing before Ragle and then Nitto. In the 600cc Modified Production, coular took on veteran racer Earl Rolofr. who ressurected his GPz550 "Time Bomb" from retirement for the race. The two were so clo e the entire race that the victory wa decided in the last turn of the last lap where a lappee got in Roloff's way and gave the win to oular by a wheel. . Champion Motorcycles' Dave adowski beat John Glover in the F3/250cc GP with low I :34 lap time. That was a surprise! Sadowski had just switched from riding produ tion machines to his new TZ250j, and in his firstouting, he beat 250 ace Glover, who has won more races on his Granada Yamaha/Barry Elliottsponsored Yamaha than you can count. In tbe last lap, after a very close race, G lover backed off in fast turn eight because of Lhestrong winds, and Sadowski took the prize. Team Honda dirt tracker Pete Hames showed up with Randy Mamola's '82 RG500 Suzuki. In his first time on a road race track he struggled to a third-place showing in the FI race after running off the track and scaring himself a few times. ''I'm not used to that wind, you sure don't have that at a dirt track," remarked Hames afterwards. Hames is riding the Aki Gototuned machine in bopes of gaining points to add to his dirt track total towards the Grand National Championship crown. Results F2; 1. Chris Mencher (Kaw); 2. While Gerig was enjoying the spoils of leading the pack, a knock down drag out battle took place over the second spot. In the first moto, Gerig had no problems taking the win leading from start to finish' while Curt Scanlon took second ahead of Poolie Serrano. The real action took place during the second round when at the start, Gerig again'jumped to an early lead followed by Serrano and Hardaway. As the race progressed, Hardaway made a few attempts at passing, only LO have Serrano push full throttle ahead. Hardaway made his final banzai attack in the la t lap and succeeded in slipping by. However. with only a few feet from the checkered flag, Hardaway laid his bike down and errano collided into him and stalled his bike. Serrano managed to get ~oing first and took the checkers for the econd place position. Before Serrano re-entered the race, Cun canlon slipped by for third. Results 80 DIV: 1. Kawasaki riders Mike Fedorow and Tim Rutherford are tied for series points with one win each. Fedorow took the first event of the season with Rutherford having the better hand in tonight's conte t. Federow recenlly switched from Yamaha to Kawasaki, and though he likes the power of the green machine, he fi nds it harder to handle on this trade In the first mOlO, Fedorow took the lead at the start and remained there LO the end. Rutherford, aboard his Century Motorcycles bike, placed second ahead of Bob Reinking, Mike Nishita and John Bush. The two-man show was most exciting in the final moLO.
