Christian, Oxley survive
Costa Mesa
By Bill Locey
COSTA MESA, CA, MAY 4
Alan "Crazy" Christian and
Brad Oxley won "crash night"
at Costa Mesa. Twenty-five riders fell over, but all managed to
exit under their own steam, causing
the fans of vicarious violence to cheer
themselves hoarse.
The three hottest riders in SoCal
speedway - Christian, Mike Faria
and Kelly Moran - joined John
Sandona for the Coors Scratch main.
Those three should win at least 90%
of the Scratch mains a t the three
southern tracks this year. Christian
drew the pole, got a perfect gate, and
won the main without problem. Faria
tried hard, but stayed second. Moran,
unbeaten thus far, settled for third as
his main event woes continued.
The Handicap main was radical
with a capital "R". Greg Ayers and
Tim McCasland were ahead by turn
two. Behind them Oxley and Buddy
Robinson, mixing equal parts compression and aggression, clanged together around turn one, and Kurt
Strommer on the outside was cut

Tom Ferris fought his way to victory
in the Scratch main event on the new
one-seventh mile oval.
Riding a Weslake for Peterich Cycle, PJI, Simpson Helmets and Interlink Motorcycle Accessory Distributing, Ferris was battling Dave Faria
Jr. for the lead on the final lap when
Faria slid high and fell coming off
the fourth turn.
Rocky Robinson finished second
on a Jawa, with Faria back up to take
. third aboard his Jawa. Fourth went
to southern California's Dennis
Briggs on a Godden.
In one of the best rides of hiS
speedway career, Briggs came off the
30-yard line to capture the Handicap
final on his B & B Foreign Auto/Oakley/Bell Helmets Godden.
Starting farther back than he ever
had in First Division, Briggs was
third on the opening lap, then ran

Four for Faria at Ventura
By Bill Locey
VENTURA, CA, MAY I
Mike Faria won the Ventura
Raceway Scratch main for the
fourth straight week. In weeks
to ~ome perhaps promoter Jim
Naylor will allow Faria to phone in
his wins in order to save fuel in the
energy-consci9us '80s.
In the main, Faria's primary competition, Kelly Moran, took the lead
around turn two, only to break down
a few feet later, nearly crashing· Faria.
Faria not only avoided Moran, but
cruised to an easy win. Moran, who
perhaps could be working on his
own streak, has suHered a mechanical trauma almost every week, and
twice while leading the Scratch main.
"I don't know what it is," said
Moran. "At first we thought it was
the magic box; we tried a slow charge
and all sons of things, but now we're
finding metal shavings under the
pan. Whatever it is, I'm tired of it."

Bennett blasts
Bakersfield MX
By Clark Emery
BAKERSFIELD, CA, APR. 29
lack Bennett rode to a pair of
convincing victories at today's
California Motosport Club
event held at Bakersfield'$
Sprocketts Park.
[n the first l25cc Novice moto,
Bennett holeshot the pack on his
Suzuki RM125, with Keith Vorhees
and Terry [sbell close behind. Exiting a tight corner, [sbell passed Vorhees, only to stall his Honda a short
time later. Isbell was quick in restarting, so he only lost one position.
By lap three, Bennett had stretched
his lead over the field to one-half lap.
Isbell moved back into second, but
went down hard in one of Sprocketts' rough whoop sections. He got
goingagain right in front of Vorhees,
and the two battled for second for the
remainder of the race, At the checkered flag, Bennett was way out front,
with Isbell second and Vorhees a
close third:
The second moLO was almost a
repeat of the first for Bennett. Vorhees fell on the last lap, and gave
second to [sbell, who earned the second overall trophy.
