The boycott was the result of a lack of haybales to protect riders from the dangerous Armco barriers around the track. West German Helmut Kassner (Yam) won the 350cc GP, and in the 250ccGP, only eight riders competed. ~ ... Denny Doherty-Five time AFM Regional Champion The AMA announced that Mel Parkhurst had been .named professional competition manager. The MIC announced (seven press releases' worth) that Matt Matsuoka, public relations director at American Honda, was elected chairman of the board of the MIC. The ORA's California City Grand Prix was highlighted by its loo-mile Amateur/Expert ra e. Danny LaPorte (Pen), more well known for his MX prowess, was on his way to the win when he got a flat rear tire at the end of the third of five 20-mile loops. LaPorte rode the fourth loop on the flat, the fifth on the bare rim. and was passed for the lead by Bultaco rider Doug Winchell only two blocks from the finish in the middle of town. LaPorte carried on for second. with Steve Staats bringing in a big fourstroke Honda for third overall. Doherty Scores Twin Double Wins. Denny Doherty, aboard his amazing vintage Kawasaki Z-l, swept two classes at Riverside and Sears Point-again. Denny's Koni shock fitted Z-l dominated the Budweiser AMA/Pro/AM Open Super Street and Formula 1 classes at Riverside International Raceway. West Virginia. The first 250cc National mota was held up after Can-Am's Gary Jones discovered that omeone had attempted to sabotage his machine by putting sugar and wa.ter in the gas tank instead of the more usual gas/oil mix. Jones recovered to finish second overall behind Yamaha's Pierre Karsmakers, who won both motos. In the 500cc ranks. Mike Hartwig looked like an easy winner after taking the first moto and leading half the second one. But his seat came orr the factory Yamaha. and he dropped back in the pack while CZ-mounted privateer Tony DiStefano advanced to take hi second National win. Spectators had their choice of Farias ata Petaluma, California, short track. David won the 250cc Expert class on an Ossa, while brother Mike was second on a Yamaha.
