the finish line, Bowen's front wheel slipped out from under him and both Holley and Hicks passed. Bowen gOt up and narrowly missed nabbing second, but only the twO tOP finishers ~ Holley and Hicks - went to the final. Final Rick Ryan, as he had done the night before, was again at the head of the pack at the stan of the final. But he had lose company - O'Mara. "Ryan was juSt to the in ide of me." O'Mara said. "but I held the thrOllle on until the last possible second. I hit the first few corners juSt right and I was on my way." And indeed he was. But a pair of heavy hillers - Bailey and Glover -were left kicking their bikes while O'Mara motored away with the lead. "We smacked into a hay bale in the first corner," Glover said. "Bailey crashed hard and I went right into him." The pair remounted, tied for last place. By lap twO, Barnell was up to second but O'Mara was already three seconds ahead. Holland, Hannah and Ryan followed, with Ward on the move from IOthand passing riders in bunches. Into lap eight, things were prelly much soned out. Ward, after dicing with Barnell and Hannah, left them behind and throllied into second behind O'Mara - eight seconds behind. Lechien was having a great ride also. and was up to third ahead of Hannah and Barnell on lap nine after starting ninth. Things remained the same through lap 18, with O'Mara's lead trimmed to six seconds by Ward, and Lechien sellled into third ahead of Hannah and Barnett. "I did what I could," Ward said. "but I simply ran out of time. I was graduallycatching]ohnny, but when you have to pass the tOP 10 riders after a stan like I had, there's not much you an do." O'Mara rolled home for the win with a five-second cushion over Ward. Le hien, Hannah, Barnell and King followed. Ryan held on for eighth. .. [ tried to pu,t some time on the pack at the very beginning," a bubbling O'Mara said after his win. "It worked, and I j LiSt pegged the throllie and hung on. [ knew Ward was closing in the final laps, but [ felt [ had enough of a cushion to win. It worked out well'" For Hannah. a somewhat smoother track and reversed direction worked against him. 'The rougher the track the better [ go," Hannah said, "and today the track was so much smoother I couldn't really get the feel of it. Last night was much beller, since I was able to pas a lot of riders in that whoop section, but they smoothed it OUt today." • SANCTIONED 7th.
