Stork survives Nebraska MX for double win By Brian George CHADRON, NB, APR. 15 Billy Stork, riding for Rice Cycles, managed to avoid the disaster that claimed other riders to win the overall in both the 125 and 250cc Pro classes at taday's Borderline Racing Association event. A set of three whoops was claiming riders all day long, as many attempted to clear all the whoops 10 one jump, but came up short. In the Open Pro class, Bill Matthews picked up the overall slot after favorite Dave Molder fell victim to the triples. Out of the gate first were the 250cc Pros, with Mike Friend grabbing the holeshot. Molder and Stork slipped in behind, and the three riders ran away from the pack. Friend built a comfortable lead over the first four laps, with Stork staying right on Molder's rear fender [or third the entire way. The lead was soon cut, when Friend's Honda shot out from under him on a muddy berm, which put both bike and body on the turf. Molder and Stork raced by as Friend picked himself up and went after the leaders. Clutch lever problems slowed Friend, keeping him in third place, well behind the leaders, for the rest of the mota. Mota two saw the same trio out front again. Friend, Molder and Stork held their positions for the first half of the mota, until Greg Hyde went down in the three whoops. As Friend slowed to miss Hyde, Molder went for all three whoops. The back tire of Molder's machine caught the third one, his right hand came off the bars, and he was sent into a spectacular series of flips. Molder was taken to the hospital, where his ankle was reported as seriously sprained, but not broken. Friend was now sporting a good lead. However, on the final lap, a lapped rider stayed in front of him and slowed his pace dramatically, allowing Stork to catch up in just a few comers. Coming into the three whoops for the final time, the slower rider blocked Friend from jumping the whoops, and Stork new into the lead. Friend came back in the next two corners, regaining the lead, but was again blocked by a lapped rider. This put the whole race up for grabs in the last 100 yards. Both Stork and Friend held their throttles wide open, charging for the big jump at the finish. As the duo hit the ramp, Stork's front wheel nudged past for the win. Friend lost the overall, and had to settle for second, while Hyde remounted to take third for the moto and the overall. In the 125s, Friend's luck was even worse, as well as LeeVern Berry's. Berry and Friend went into the first turn side-by-side, and headed for the whoops. Berry endoed while trying to £Iy past for the lead; allowmg Friend the honors. Friend's lead lasted onlya couple of laps. as his shift lever became wrapped under the frame, and he had to pull off to straighten it. This allowed Stork to pull into first. Molder found himself as the runner- up, as he could not get around Stork by the finish, while Friend had to settle for eighth.. In mota two, Molder was in the hospital, and Stork looked like the favorite. Friend took the holeshot, with Stork second and Berry third. Friend was having difficulties, and pulled off the track on the opening lap, not to return. Stork and Berry set up a tight race for the lead, until halfway through the moto, when both riders attempted to clear all three whoops, and disaster struck the runner-up. Berry's front end JUSt missed clearing the top of the third hill. Berry crashed, with the bike slamming down on top of him. The crash broke his collarbone, as well as his machine. Stork now had the lead all to himself, and rolled in for the overall victory ahead of Joel Henry and Ladd Poitra. Results 125 PRO: 1. Billy Stork (Han); 2. Joel Henry (Kaw); 3. Lorain, Ohio 44053 Craft carves Swan MXwin By Gary Willer 2650 H Mercantile Or., Rancho Cordova, CA 9~670 You never lose with Cycle News TYLER, TX, APR. I "Steady Eddie" Craft showed up at the Swan MX course today with his big red CR480 Honda, ready for some serious racing. Craft proceeded to run the wheels off the 25OcciOpen Novice combined class, showing the other riders only his back side. The 14-yearold dominated the competition in both motos, carving the Swan course with the skill of someone with much more experience. The action in both motos was consistent, as there was not a large rider turn-out due to scheduling conflicts with the Texas GNC Series. The pattern developed like this: Craft would push to the front, followed by Charlie Davison, Steve Davison, Danny Smith and Ray Keough. This order would remain fairly steady throughout the entire moto. The Beginners, fielding a class of 14 competitors, comprised the largest combat force this day. Gaylon Langford wa's again the dominant factor on his 250cc Suzuki, as he led all laps of the combined 125 and 250cc motos. The nearest threat to Langford, and landing in second place in both bashes, was Shayne Brightwell. Third went to Michael Wallace. - Results 80 STK: 1. Michael Krueger (Kaw); 2. Allen Keough (Kaw); 3.
