Bernardino - V.nhra - Anburn BAYLANDS RACEWAY PARK PRESENTS Andy Northrup won the Handicap mam. A dead bike caused Denny Scopellite LO scratch, giving a D-I ride to Mark Dwyer, who LOok full advantage of the situation as he won his heal. Faria showed why handicap racing is the best as he passed five victims LO win off the 50-yard-line. Northrup, who barely held off Brad Oxley [or third in his heat, barely beat Faria for second behind Ed Castro in a Semi. Larsen won the other semi. After Pat Hawley fell over in the main, it was a cruise for Northrup, even though Castro cut the winning advantage LO four lengths on the last lap. In scratch racing, Faria, Kelly Moran, Buddy Robinson and jim Lawson were hal. In a semi which turned out LO be the best r:iCe in a long time, Moran waited until Faria was safely bottled up behind Oxley on the inside before blasting by both of them on the outside. After Faria got nowhere on the inside, he went around Oxley on the outside on the last lap. In the main, Faria passed Moran in turn two and was never threatened, partly because Moran's bike died on' the second bend. jim Lawson was second, followed by the· newest Riverside rider, Robinson. In what's shaping up as the ballie of the year, it's . I-I with a win each [or Faria and Moran. In a fast lap time show at halftime, Larsen earned $50 with a winning time of 12.831 around the liS-mile oval. Shawn Moran setlhe record last year with a rapid 12.35 seconds. Second Division, which has more guys with D-I dreams than ever, began in a normal enough manner. Local "Wonderous Walt" Farnum nailed john Mazzacane -on the last lap LO take his heat from back on the 30. Chris Mistrella edged by Rocky Robinson in the last turn LO earn a transfer behind winner Donny BuLler. Former flat lracker Danny Perkins made everyone else look slow as he won from the 20. Any similarity to real speedway racing ended in the main; it was more like demolition derby. Everything was fine for two laps until Mazzacane flipped' around ·turn two and Mistrella slid out, avoiding unsightly tire marks on the fallen rider. Neither made it back Fbr the restarl. With only four riders left, BuLler was easily winning until he went down in the scariest looking crash ever. just around turn two, Butler was suddenly launched airborne 0(£ his bike and cartwheeled at least 40 feet along the LOp of the cement wall, eventually ending up behind the wall and off the track. Amazingly enough, Butler was up and walking away after less than a minute, seemingly more embarrassed than hun. Since three laps were down, the race was declared an "over", with Dennis Hall the winning survivor. Third Division looked like at least Sixth or Seventh Division, as seven riders fell over during the three tries it took LO get this one into the books. Everyone crashed at least once, except for rookie jeff jones who led each time. jones and Oxnard golf hero joe Bishop were the only finishers. 0 A SPEEDWAY M MOTORCYCLE RACING A EVERY THURS.
