Dave Watson (31) and Eric' Geboers (9) lead winner Georges Jobe (11) and Hakan Carlqvist (1) on the start of moto one on the Austrian turf. World Championship Observed Trials Series: Round 6 German win to Schreiber By Mike Rapley section course - a catalog of errors that dropped him to third behind Schreiber and Michaud, who was second. Michaud; by gaining two more points than Lejeune, has moved to within four points of the defending champion. . Michau'd started of[ the day brilliantly, taking his time over the dry and grippy sections which weren't too hard [or a World Championship trial and led at the end of the first lap with 20 marks lost. Schreiber was second with 23. As the sections became easier, Bernie, now [amiliar with the terrain, put in a super lap and strode into the lead. Michaud slipped a bit, but it was Lejeune everybody should have been worrying about. He put in the best lap o[ the trial to that point and moved one mark ahead o[ Michaud. Behind the top three, fourth place was shared by talented youngsters Andreu Codina, on the factory Mon· tesa, and Philippe BerlatieJ', on the factory Italjet. While it could be expected these two would baule [or fourth it wasn't to be. Both struck trouble with Berlatier dropping to seventh and Codina havinga disaster and finishing in 12th. While they were slipping, another pair of youngsters were climbing in the shape o[ John Lampkin and Steve Saunders of Britain. John went on to finish fourth with Steve fifth, to put Saunders fifth overall in the title cnase in only hi second season. It ~as at the top, way ahead of the rest, that the best three trials riders in the world were having their own private baule. Schreiber, with the lead firmly ensnared wasn't going to lose out and put in the best lap of the day to finish with a six point win. Lejeune stayed steady and lost the same as he had on his second lap while Michaud improved considerably to take second overall. Lejeune must have been left reflecting that even though he had the greatest number o[ cleans in the trial, 19, his seven fives to Schreiber's two and Michaud's three was just not World Champion standard. Even though SWM-mounted Schreiber came out of the event with 20 points to add to his tally, it is still Honda's Eddy Lejeune who leads the title chase from Fantic rider Thierry Michatld with Berniea dista'lce back in third. By Lejeune's standards he had a poor day, losing seven five mark penalties around the three-lap, [i[teen- Georges lobe, Kawasaki's num ber one rider, emerged as the biggest threat to Hakan Carlqvist's 500cc World Chamr>ionship crown as he beat the titleholder to win both motosattheopening round in Austria. CarIqvist pressured Jobe in both motos, but never pa sed the 23-year-old 250cc World Champion. In moto one, both were snarled up in a first [urn melee and completed the opening lap 27th and 30th.
