TEri YEARS AGO Husqvarna's Heikld Mikkola won both motos in the opening round of the SOOcc World Motocross Championship Series at Sittendorf, Austria. Maico teammates Adolph Weil and Willi Bauer placed second and third overall. In the 2SOcc MXGP at Milan, Italy, American Bultaco rider Jim Pomeroy was a big sensation, selling fast time in practice and leading both motos before succumbing to mechanical troubles. CZ factory rider Jaroslav Falta won both motos to take a fivepoint lead in the standings over KTM rider Guennady Moisseev. Kenny lahrt and Mike Hartwig were the big winners in an AMA 2SO/SOOcc National Motocross held at Buchanan, Michigan. Riding a Bultaco, Zahn took his first National by taking both motos, while Can-Am's Gary Jones rode to a 3-2 for second overall. In the SOOs, Yamaha's Hanwig also pulled a two-moto sweep, while Kawasaki's Jimmy Weinert finished second overall, also with a 3-2. In ari AMA Pro half mile, the Expert main event was a British-bred battle between the Norton of David Aldana and the Triumph of Tom Rockwood. Aldana led going into turn three on the final lap, but Rockwood -pulled inside of him in the final turn and took a narrow victory. With the opening of the paved highway running the length of the Baja California peninsula, the 27-hour Tijuana-to-La Paz record fell substantially. Ridinga Harley-Davidson Sponster, Larry Bornhurst covered the 900-plus miles in II hours and SO minutes. Only eight points/seconds separated Penton rider Carl Crankeand Bultacomounted Cordis Brooks at the end of the two-day ISDT Qualifier held in the California desen by the Sunland Shamrocks M.C. Cranke, the winner of the 2SOcc class, had a big lead in special test times at theendof the first day, enough of a cushion to hold off SOOcc winner Brooks' day two charge. Riding a monoshock Yamaha, Mick Andrews won the French round of the World Observed Trials Championship. Swedish Montesa rider Ulf Karlsson placed second. Over in Europe to gain experience, American Marland Whaley placed II th overall on a Montesa. In a Moreno Valley M.C. motocross at DeAnza Cycle Park, a Husqvarna rider named Michael Jackson won the Open Expen class. Speaking of Jacksons, in a Petaluma, California, scrambles, Reggie Jackson finished third in the l2Scc Junior class behind Brad Kotsaris and Red Bray. A.C. Bakken (Hus) took the overall win in the Simi Valley M.e. D-37 hare and hound. Second overall went to another ride on a big Husky, Bob Balentine. NMA WORLD MINI GRAND PRIX 1st Mike Healey, 83cc Stk.
