In practice for lhe 250cc GP. less than a second covered the lOp 14 finishers. The surprise pole position holder was Jean-Michel Mallioli of France on a Chevallier. West Germany's Manfred Herweh on a Real staned second and local rider FausLO Ricci staned third on a 'Yamaha. Fourth fastest qualifier was Yamahamounted Carlos Lavado. the defending World Champion from Venezuela. whose time was just three-tenths of a second off Mattioli's. Wayne Rainey's Yamaha seized in qualifying and he gridded 19th for the 250c(' race. When lhe green nag fell Rainey pushed his bike. bumped il and stalled. By Ihe time he finally got going he had spoILed Ihe field 30 places. By lap five Rainey was 12th; on Ihe 27th l;ip he broke the 2SOcc track record by 0.02 seconds. working his way lhrough the field. Up frolll. reigning 250cc World Champion Carlos Lavado was being chased by Wayne Rainey (55) overcame a terrible start to finish third in the 250cc race. Here he is in 18th place. Romagna Ricci, Martin Wimmer and M. Matteoni. all on Yamahas. The order stayed the same until Lavado fell on the 281h of 33 laps. unhurt. One lap later Malleoni fell and Ricci took the lead ahead of Wimmer. After Ihe crashes Ihe pace slacked off considerably. Rainey was in sixth place with four laps to go and - to his surprise - picked up another three places 10 finish third. _ Results 500cc: 1. Freddie Spencer (Hon); 2. Eddie LawBon (Vern); 3.
