BOX 0550 LAKELAND, FLA. 33802 - Brown blasts OTHG hare scrambles By Moto-Depo RENO, NV, APR. 8 Kevin Brown, riding a Yerington Honda Shop Honda, ran a smooth and steady race today, to take the overall win in the Over The Hill Gang's 72-mile hare scrambles. jesse's Cycle/Hi-Point KTM rider Charlie Halcomb was the leader for the major portion of the race but slowed, due 10 mechanical problems, and let Brown past for the win. The course was run over six loops, with many riders not able to go the distance. Brown's performance today established him as a force to be reckoned with in the race for the number one cross country plate. At the stan of the Novice race David Porter, riding a Moto-Deposponsored 250 Yamaha, had a perfect stan and led the race from stan to finish for the overall win. The real race was for second overall, with Maico-mounted Ken Nystrom nabbing Kirk Paulson (Hon) by a wheel at the finish line. Both riders were on open class bikes. The first four lap of the Expert race was led by Halcolm, who had a perfect starl. Following Halcolm was the Jesse's Cycle KTM of Ken Ramsey, Brown and Brad Halcomb, with Vet Gary Vanderpool's KTM bringing up the rear of the leading pack. Conrad Stitser (KTM) had a good stan, but broke his shift lever, and had to return to the pil for a new lever. He proceeded 10 pass moslof the 70 rider field and finish eighth overall. Stitser wa not the la I rider to stan. Dave McComos. a young motocrosser riding his first desert ra e, overcame a few difficulties including a frayed brake cable and a motor that wanted 10 load up, but still won the 125cc Expen class, finishing in lhe tOp twenty overall. Halfway through the race, things had sellied down and Halcomb was in the lead. Brown was close behind, waiting for a mistake'. Ram cy was third. af\d Kevin's brother Darrell Brown, on a 480 Honda, was in founh after a mediocre sIan. Fifth was Duke Dowell, who wasdominatingthe250son his Hi-Point/DiabloSport Cycles KTM. On the fifth of the 12-mile loops, things got exciting. Kevin Brown came into the pit first, with Halcolm following, his rear brake rod broken. I After a long pit SlOp, he went after Brown, but Brown was on the gas, and continued to stretch his lead all the way to the finish. The race was a great success, with the proceeds going 10 benefit a young boy who needs a bone marrow transplant, Dylan Wiggins. Results 125 NOV: 1. Robert Hopkins. 125 JR: 1. Mike Torr... 125. EX: 1. Emde blasts Sears Point In controversial win By John Ulrich and Roger Smith SONOMA, CA, APR. I After politics forced him to start at the back of the second wave, Dave Emde charged the Kosman Specialties Kawasaki 1198cc KZIOOO Superbike 10 the overall AFM Superslreet win at Sears' Point Raceway. Emde had already run away with the Formula One win, beating Rich Oliver's 750cc KZ750 Superbike and Superstreet King Denny Doherty's 1200cc KZ900 Superbike. But AFM Superstreet rules require an operating alternator; that fact has much to do with AFM Official Doheny's dominance since he's one of the few riders to build a full-on Superbike with the charging system still in place. Erode had come to ride, and entered the Superstreet race even though the Kosman machine wasn't legal; the alternator wasn't installed. The way Emde saw it, he'd ride the race and be disqualified. But Doheny didn't want Emde 10 stan, and complained that Emde shouldn't be on the grid. Officials then sent Emde back 10 the rear of the second (75Occ) wave in the combined race. With a 15-second pause between waves, Erode would have his hands full catching Doheny. When the second-wave flag finally fell, Emde passed 20 riders in the first turn and set off like a madman, charging and weaving through traffic any way he could, sliding and bumping included. On one lap Emde hit oil in Turn Two, his feet flying off the pegs and the Kawasaki tankslapping and sliding at the same time. Emde saved it, saying later that the incident was as close as he ever came to crashing without actually falling off. The race came down to the last lap, when Emde finally had Doheny in his sights: he bulled past in Turn Four but ran off the track, and Doheny retook the lead. But Emde stuffed past entering Turn Seven at the beginning of the esses, and simply flew away down the esses themselves leaving Doheny far behind. ExitingTurn II, he turned and waved at Doheny. Formula single fans saw several new thumper projects on maiden voyages, but it was a veteran machine that took the honors. As the green flag dropped, Michael Kane took the lead on his Ron johnson-prepared Suzuki. Allan Yarrow and Kurt Sager, on their Yamahas, were close behind. The trio soon outdistanced the field, with Kane's horsepower and Sager's super smooth riding style giving them an edge over Yarrow. Sager took the lead, but Kane kept threatening. On the last lap Sager tried to lengthen his lead, but his bike faltered. and Kane shot by him in Turn Seven. Yarrow took a solid second and Sager limped in, his bike missing badly, for a third place finish. Results FORM I: 1. Dove Emde (Kew~ 2. Rich 01_ (KIw): 3. Denny Doheny (Kew). FORM II: 1.
