The RS250R has a six-speed transmission. a self-generating CDI and dry cl utch. The crankcases and many engine parts are shared with a new 250cc street bike introduced for the Japanese market on April 23. The engine fits into an aluminum chassis; a cast steering head and cast swingarm pivot plates are linked by square section tubing; the tube ends fit between ribs 'in the castings. An aluminum rearsub·frame bolts to the main frame and supports the seat. Wheelbase is 53 inches, rake 25.5°, trail 3.5 inches. The box-section swingarm is built up from aluminum plate and features Pro-Link single-shock suspension. The shock body is chromed and may be indentical to the shock used on the street bike mentioned earlier. Spring preload is hydraulically adjustable with a remote knob positioned on a frame top tube, where the rider can reach it. The front forks have 37mm stanchion tubes and are held by cast aluminum triple clamps. Rebound damping in the right fork leg can be adjusted by turning a plastic collar on the fork cap to any of three positions; compression damping in the left leg is adj ustable by turning a knob at the base of the slider to one of four positions. The left fork leg is also equipped with Honda's TRAC anti-dive system. Both forks have air fittings built into their caps. There are two IO-inch stainlesssteel brake discs on the front wheel, with Nissin dual-piston calipers. The stainless rear disc measures 8.7 inches with a single-piston caliper. Wheels are Dymagcast magnesium, a 16-inch front and and 18-inch rear. At Riverside, McDonald ran a 3.25/4.50-16 Michelin on the front and a 3.75/5.00-18 Dunlop KRI33 on the rear. According to Ceit!. the subject of the RS250R first came up during product planning meetings l8months ago. Ceitl says he immediately ordered 20; due to production problems, he was told recently that he would receIve only four. A week later he learned he would receive only two, the one already raced by McDonald and one other. Ceitl thinks he'll receive several more by late October and plans to sell them at that time. If the bikes are sold, spare parts will be sold at every AMA National and Pro-Am race. Projected price of the bike and a spares kit is about $6500 or $7000. • Dan Sl1l.J'th and Dan A h scraft Dan & Dan take their winning show to Las Vegas.
