TtlE NATIONAL PAPERS ~ 00 O'l z 3: o a: CD UJ ...J « o ~ g o r l>. Looking back at Ascot and Sacramento Those 76 Experts that timetrialed for the Ascot TT is some sort of a modern day record for number of riders ... Pete Hames and Scott Pearson both learned a hard one·time-only lesson ... don't wave off a good first attempt in time trials... Both tried a second run and eliminated themselves from the program ... Hames fell off, Pearson burned the electrical system ... Never before in the 23 previous Ascot National TTs has the final gone down to he checkered flag... It did this time and many were belting three time winner, jorgy Jorgensen, would pass the kid, Doug Chandler, somewhere before the flag... jorgy could not find the wav around and th is kid Chandler su'rprised more than one long time ra e-watcher... The teenager also won the annual Cardena Gold Cup half mile on Friday night... Becoming only the second rider to win the back-to-back events in the l2yearsofrunning... Chandler and his Honda half-milerdefeated II Harley's in scoring hi first half mile win of the year. .. It maya Iso be the first time the Honda brand has won a big bike Expert final at the longtime speed oval... In addition to the final, two other races ranked as "Best Of Night"... One was when old pro Gary COlt got knocked off the track in the first lap of the heat and came from last to take second... The other was watching the three Harley factory team riders battle all the way for third in the final... All three had the last winner's circle spot at one time or another with the final decision to Scotty Parker who has never won a TT·... It was the II th try for jay Springsteen in the event and he still has not finished in the top three... The winning time by Chandler was over II seconds faster than the time turned in last year... Chandler's teammate, Bubba Shoben wa forced out running for the lead when a nut carne loose in the gearbox and stopped tbe 600 single... jerry Griffith said after the race thaI lhere was no question, Shoben had the fastest bike on the track... No rookie made the Ascot nor the Sacramento finals... There are just too many proven riders on the ci rcuit ... When is a rookie not a rookie??? Chandler did not become an Expert until the lasl half of '83 ... Does this actually mean he is not a full fledged "Veteran" until july. omelhing to think about. .. Who has lhe dark cloud over them this year. .. Terry Poovey wins the award hands down ... The Texan has been black-flagged off the track in the main event al both A cot and Sacramento... This has to be another record of son for an individual rider. .. It's not thaI Texa Terry is a bad guy, he' one of the most likeable on the circuit. .. His bikes just have problems... It may be a big problem from the Sacramento event where he refused to pull off after being flagged two laps in a row ... They stopped the race and then there was no question other than how much the fine will be or how long he will walch and not ride... The AMA has to put teeth into the black flag rule or forget it until after the race is over. .. Sacramento ... Ricky Graham missed the Ascot TT and had to be helped to his Honda twin every time he was on the track, his right foot still far from healed ... But who uses a right foot' on the mile... All three Team Honda riders ended up in the same heat race... There were only three of the red, white and blue entered against the more than 50 Harleys... Graham the hottest rider on the circuit right now... He ha won five of the last ix Nationals he has entered in ... This dates back to the A cot half mile la t September... Rapid Rick also has won the last two mile in a row and is the defending champ for the May 6th San jose evenl. .. Where has the pringsteen luck gone... Jay has had mechanicaltrou· bles in two of the last three Nation· als... He used to run an entire sea on without a ingle misfire... It·s just a mailer of time until he wins his 39th National... And 40th, 41 St, elc. .. Ted Boody rode the bike Ihal Graham raced in all the miles in ' 3.. , Boody arne so close 10 winning his second career mile... The last and only time was way back in 1977... Graham re orded his seventh career mile win ... Thi moves him to seventh in theall-time mile win column and from his hun·ride al Sacto there will be many more wins before the season is over. .. He has to win only three more to tie Hank Scott for econd... That would put him only two behind the front runningSpring· steen who has a record dozen on the big ovals... The big upset win by Honda stopped a six-in-a-row win streak by Harley ... The last time a brand other than Harley won in Sacramento was the last year at the old Fairgrounds mile (1970) when Gene Romero and the late Tom Rockwood raced Triumph's to a runaway one·two fin· ish... Romero is now the din track manager for Honda and one of the happiest guys in the pits after the big upset... The '70 final wa for 50 laps, or twice the distance the now run ... Gary Scott and Steve Eklund the only two former mile winners to not make the Saeto final. .. Twelve others made it, some lhe hard way... Steve failed 10 make it last year as well. .. Scott has never had any luck at Sacto, his best finish has been seventh, twice... Roxy Rockwood NEW Crossline pants ... $75. 95 On'7 "White.
