O·M.... led from start to fini.h in the m.in .nd w •• unch.llenged. He now lead. the point standing. by 11 over Rick Johnson. By the time the third lap was complete Glover and Bailey had saiJed past Holley and were engaged in a dogfight for second, staying within whispering distance of each other for the next two laps. However, ~ ended in a spectacular crash that sent Glover's Yamaha endoing into the grandstands. The two collided in mid-air over a jump, with Bailey recovering first and continuing on. Glover had to pull his bike off the lap of a spectator, who amazingly enough, was unhurt, then wrestle it over the guard rail and down a three-foot wall. "I came over the top of the camelback jump and made a little mistake, letting David get underneath me," said Glover. "Then I tried to square him up but he went straight into my side. I don't think that David expected me to come up that hard on him. I went down and my bike sailed over the berm and into the stands. It's amazing that no one was hurt'" "Broc doesn't decide to race until someone tries to pass him," said Bailey. "I was a little bit in front of him and couldn't see what he was doing. All I did was hit the jump as fast as I could because I knew he would square it and go underneath me. I'm not out there crazy, a wide-open "Magoo" trying to run over people. It was a completely accidental thing on my part, and on his too, I'm sure. It was unfortunate, but we were both going for the same line." Bailey recovered in eighth while Glover re-entered the race a lap and a half down. The crash put Lechien inlO second ahead of Holley, Hannah, Ward, Liles and Johnson. During the fifth lap Holley dropped back to eighth and handed Ward, who had just passed Hannah, third. Bailey quickly advanced to fourth while Johnson also moved in on the action, passing Hannah and setting after Bailey. Near the end of the molO Johnson did make it past Bailey, and Ward was his nexttargel. Ward was a reluctant victim for two laps, but when he got a bit sideways over ajump, John·son found a way by. By this time there was no chance of Johnson catching O'Mara. O'Mara sailed easiJy to take the win while Johnson crossed the checkered in second. Ward finished third Jeff W.rd c....hed in his qu.lifier but fini.hed third in the m.in. ahead of Bailey, Lechien, Liles and Hannah. "I had no problems out there," said O'Mara. "I tried to ride smooth and not make any mistakes. All the way I watched my mechanic Jim Felt holding the chalkboard to see how far ahead I was. I could tell I had it pretty comfortable." "I got a bad start," said Ward. "Johnny was out in front and was given a huge lead by people crashing. Then I got a cramp in my leg a lap or two before Johnson started catching me. I couldn't take right handers. I would put my foot out and it would cramp right up." "I'm pretty disappointed," said Bailey. "I felt I could catch O'Mara and I'm pretty upset that they cut the laps down to 18 instead of 20. The promoters decided to cut the race down two laps 10 try and make the racing more exciting. I don't like it when they feel that they can change the rules around whenever they feel like it!" • Results 1B-LAP FINAL: 1. Johnny O'Mara (Han): 2. Ricky Johnson (Vam); 3. Jeff Ward (Kaw); 4.
