LOry in the Novice Stock and Modified class and Damon Watkins claimed second in both classes. Robbie Olson surprised the 250cc Stock and Modified Amateur class with two victories on his new Honda, after only two hours practice as a 250cc rider. Dave Townsend and Suzuki rider john Almeida settled for seconds in each class. ..... ... Thomsen's show 0.. < at DeAnza By Michael Gillies SUNNYMEAD, CA, APR. 8 Malcolm Smith's Tom Thomsen (Yam) smoked today's 250cc Intermediate class at DeAnza Cycle Park. Leading both of his (Above) Tom Holt (34H) took second in the 126cc Jr. class at the Dunes. (Below) John McKibben captured two wins at Firebird Raceway. ~ ::;) U CIl CIl Z z w o ~ e o it Blose on top at Don Hart Memorial MX in Blythe. By Sandy Berm BLYTHE, CA, APR. 8 Kawasaki rider Chappy Blose cleaned up the special Don Hart Memorial Pro Purse, (in memory of a 19-year-old rider 34 who met with a fatal auto accident a year ago), with a first place in both the I25cc and 250cc Pro class. Team Green rider ScOll Keyes squeezed out a well-earned second place in the 125cc Pro class and new 250cc Pro star Eric Kirk, aIter two hot holeshots and holding Blose off for II of the 12 lap moLOS, slid out on the last lap before the checkered flag, and sellled for second behind Blose. jimmy "Monkey" ButLOn, American Honda rider, LOok a first in the Pee Wee and 80cc Amateur Modified class with Wes Parker second. SCOll Ardema, after a second moLO holeshot, held off the other rider Brent Wineland and jimmy Button. Kevin Cook claimed a double vic- moLOS from Slart to finish just wasn't enough for Thomsen, though; he passed and beat half of the 250cc Pro class in the first moLO. Thomsen roosted his YZ250 LO the head of the pack in moLO one with BTS Oil's Tony Strangio (Kaw) and Torco's Keith Dysert (Suz) arguing over second. By lap three Ruben Alvarado (Suz) watched the Dysertl Strangio duel from behind and was obviously held back by it. Alvarado took over second place on the fifth lap with about 100 yards separating him from Thomsen, who was just catching the 250cc Pro race that started half a lap ahead of him. Dysert and Strangiocontinued LO ballie through the 10th lap, when lapped riders and fatigue forced them LO sellie down with Strangio holding third. Thomsen cruised through the checkers first, Alvarado was econd, while Strangio and Dysert were third and fourth. Thomsen's second moLO was, for him, a carbon copy of his first, except he only passed two Pros this time out so as not to look too conspicuous. Rounding the first turn just behind Thomsen was Alvarado, Dysert and Buena Park Yamaha's john Sullivan. By the end of the first lap, Strangio passed Sullivan and applied pressure to Dysert. Unfortunately, Strangio went down on lap three and didn't remount until the fifth lap, pUlling him in last place. Thomsen continued to lead but was definitely working harder this moLO because Alvarado saw his chance for the overall win about 10 feet in front of him. Thomsen kept his cool, though, and didn't let Alvarado find any weak points in his defense of his perfect I-I score. Alvarado's 2-2 nelled him second, while Dysert's 4-3 gave him third. Mike Carlo (Hon) was fourth with a 6-4. One25OccPro whodefinitelydidn't worry about being passed by Thomsen, was Suzuki Country's Brent Bloun l. He won his first 250cc race with a 2-1 score. Blount traded moLO wins with john "Poor Boy" Slavens (Kaw), while Gerry Lallimer (Kaw) held on for third with a 3-3 score. Results PEE WEE: 1. Jon Pluls (Ylml; 2. Billy Vllko (Ylm); 3. McCoy stars at Budweiser Pre-Summer Bash atfhe Dunes By Tom Griffith VALENCIA, CA, APR. 8 Mouse McCoy brought his newest Kawasaki mount to American Motocross Enterprises Budweiser-sponsored PreSummer Bash at Indian Dunes International track today. The KX 125 fitted Mouse's growing frame much better than past KXSO's, and he showed the 125cc Intermediates he has learned LO handle the larger mount. By the time the 125cc Intermediate pack got to the sandy section on lap one of moLO one, Guy Arnone was fighting for the lead with no less tha,n five other hotl25s behind. The KTM of Mike Knapp, Suzuki of Mike Hughes, Yamaha o£ Pat McConnell, Arnone's Honda and McCoy's Kawie made their own race and left the other ten riders racing for sixth place. When the white flag appeared Arnone assumed the lead, but less than two seconds behind came Mouse and Hughes. At the start of moLO two, they blasted up the start hill with Brad Toms of Kawasaki Goleta in front. The racing was exciting as, again, McCoy, Hughes, Arnone and Toms diced for first. At mid-race, McCoy came around all alone, Arnone had stalled back in the LOwer section. A distant second was Mike Hughes, then in sixth came Arnone. Time ran out before Guy could get back within striking distance of either Hughes or McCoy, and brought his Brad Support-CR125 into third and second overall behind Mouse's 2-1 first place score, Hughes grabbed third overall followed by Toms in fourth and Pete Csulak in fifth. The Minicycle action saw several riders from WashingLOn state doing battle with the local hot shoes. RenLOn Kawasaki/Pj I-sponsored Oren Bray from Renton, WA, paced the Mini Experts to first overall and also took fourth-place brass in the 125cc juniorrace. Another of the Washington troop was Mini Beginner Susan Chapman aboard her KX80 taking a solid 3-4 score and third overall. Results PEE WEE BEG: 1. Robby Hlmmond (Vlml; 2. Shane Andersen (Ylm).
