..... ..... ... 0. < (Above) David Bailey (right) and Broc Glover are about to collide with two turns left in the first moto. (Below right) The sequence shows what happened. Bailey recovered first and took the checkered about 1 00 feet away. Ron Lechien (7) chases Mark Barnett. Keith Bowen and ~Iint Hardick early in the first 250cc moto. Rick Johnson. however. won it. On the final lap, King went wide on an uphill, 0(( camber turn which gave johnson just the room he needed to slip by King for the win. King followed in second ahead of Bowen, Hardick, Kawasaki's Kent Howerton and Suzuki's Ross Pederson. A lot of riders were out for revenge in the second molO, but it was Lechien who showed them all how LO ride fast. Lechien clearly dominated the second round, leading from start to finish. King held second early in the moLO, but Barnett passed King during the second lap. Bowen was again on the gas, reeling in and ·passing Barnett two laps later, then crashing and dropping to fifth. The pressure was on King in third, and with two laps togo, King clipped a fence after landing from ajumpand crashed. King kept his cool, remounted and fired his Honda back to life before Bowen came hy. johnson, who spent most of the moLO in fourth, started to fade near the end of the race, letting Bowen and Hannah by. When the checkered appeared, it was Lechien with the win, but King with the points lead Barnett took second ahead of King, Bowen, Hannah and johnson. - "My thumhwas hurtinga little bit, because I dislocated it in the firstmoto crash," said Lechien. "I got a good start and tried to take it easy and not hit the rough stuff." "I got a bad start and rode like a jerk," was about all that Hannah had to say after his second moLO. 500cc National The big-bore class featured another dice between Bailey and Yamaha's Broc Glover~ Glover stole the holeshOl at the start of the first molO, while Honda-mounted joey Schlag, Bailey, Yamaha pilot Kenney Keylon and Kawasaki's Goat Breker followed. Bailey quickly took care of Schlag and tried to reel in Glover but couldn't. Glover was riding smooth and jumped to a six-second lead on Bailey. By the third lap Breker passed both Keylon and Schlag but was off the pace of the two lead~rs. By the midway point, Glover still enjoyed the six-second lead, then Bailey started to gain slowly. Near the end of the moLO, Bailey was gaining nearly a second a lap on Glover. When the two received the white £lag, Bailey was breathing down Glover's back, the spectalOrs on their feet, screaming for their favorite. With only two turns remaining, in a tight off camber "S" turn, Bailey made his last-ditch effort 10 pas Glover. Glover cut the first turn tight, rolling on the throttle, while Bailey went wide, using the berm. Bailey held the throttle wide open, and the two collided, crashing 10 the ground. Bailey fell on top of Glover as the two raced to pick up their mount LO take the checkers not more than 100 feet way. Bailey had the break; his Honda kept running, giving him the edge LO take the win. Glover recovered in sec:ond while Danny "Magoo" Chandler came around in third ahead of Breker and Yamaha-mounted Peter Snorteland. "Broc took the inside, which is' what I expected him to do," said Bailey. "But, it was slick inside and 1 had the outside berm. 1 felt 1 could beat him around the corner so we would be side-by-side going into the next turn where 1 would have the inside advantage. I gave it everything 1 had, then 1 backed off because 1 knew we were going to collide. My front wheel dug underneath the fence and 1 fell on top of him. 1 kept my engine running and that made the difference, because these big, hyper-space machines don't crank over easily! Broc was riding really good. Near the end. 1 knew 1 had the pre sure on him because he made a few mistakes, so 1 thought 'I got him right where 1need · hi m. .. "That's the way it goes," said Glover. "There's no hard feelings. We were actually joking about it between mOlOS. That's racing!'" The second moLO was a bit easier for Bailey. He shot out into the early lead while Glover, after a third-place start behind Schlag, followed Bailey around about eight seconds behind 1hroughout the moLO. Breker's chances of a top placing ended early after gelling taken out during a huge first turn pile-up. Local favorite Donnie Cantaloupi, riding for the last time on a Yamaha before riding a Honda for Team Tamm, put in an outstanding ride coming up from an eighth place start to finish third, after assin Johnny O'Mara leads Jeff Ward shortly in the second 125cc moto. mounted Phil Larson, who finished seventh in the first molO, late in the race. "Broc got close and 1 started to make a few mistakes, then 1 thought, 'Oh no, not another first molOl''' said Bailey after the second round. 1 managed 10 gain some ground on him. '. Results 125cc: 1.
