raardI•• - V••tara - A....ra pressed after sweeping the Scratch portion of the program on opening night at John LaDouceur's Inland Motorcycle Speedway Wednesday. Riding the Oakley/Shoei/KalGard/STP Weslake, Faria scored convincing wins in both his heat and semi. In the main, he drew the number two spot on the grid. Mike Bast, appearing in his 99th IMS Scratch main got the pole with John Sandona in three and Dubb Ferrell in spot four. Faria was the first to react to the rise of the tapes, but Bast was first into turn one. Once out front Bast is usually hard to pass but Faria and Sandona blazed by on the backchute on lap one. Sandona tried the inside coming 0[[ turn [our on the opening revolution, but Faria got a great drive and was gone for the duration. Bast came back hard under Sandona in turn three on lap two in his bid [or second.• andona was equal to the challenge, but Bast had clearly established an inside position and on the next bend he began to move Sandona to the outside and back to third position. Suddenly they came upon Ferrell, who had fallen the previous lap, his bike, and some o[ the corner flagmen. Both riders had to take evasive action, but they were clearly outdone by the comer worker who had to literally dive over the wall to avoid getting run over. Faria, oblivious to all this aerion, took the win by three quarters o[ a straightaway over Bast and Sandona. Dennis Bransford, who took the season-opening Second Division main in 1980 made a lot more money tonight when he copped the Handicap main £rom the twenty yard line. "Cushion riding" Dennis Briggs and Greg Ayers staged a great battle [or the lead over the first three circuits, until Briggs decided to see i[ his leathers worked. They worked great but it cost Dennis a lot of money as Ayers inherited the lead and Dennis ended up fifth. Bransford swung wide and took the lead away from Ayers at the white flag. Sandona, who was riding well everywhere on the track, then charged Bransford and tried to pass him on the outside. Bransford shut the door and Sandona was forced to settle for second, one length back. Andy Northrup (JBeM Trophy Be Silk Screen) powered his brand new Weslake to the win in the thrilling Second Division main. Bryce Eikelberger looked good and led the initial two laps before he went down, letting Pat Cain by. Northrup, who was charging on the outside, pulled even with Cain, then slipped ahead at the end of the third circuit. Cain came right back in the first comer and they went at it side-by-side until Northrup inched ahead at the white flag. Gain tried to challenge again, but was forced to settle for second as the two racers streaked across the line nose to tail. Randy Blevins finished third. Don Bishop (Jaw) led wire to wire to lay claim to the Third Division hardware. Doug Benjamin used a lap three Ron Williams bobble to move into second while Walt Barnum took third. - UDCO u;.el' CONGRATULATIONS TO: ALAN KING Team Tamm 1st Place AMA National Motocross 250cc Class Point Standings ..
