Name Address _ _'-- By Dale Brown Jeff Ward openly credits his factory Kawasaki machinery for much of his 1984 success, ·buttuner Mike McAndrews says that there is nothing new or radical about the works 125 in the photos above. "It's basically what we've been running for the past couple of seasons," says McAndrews, "just improved and refined each year." Like a production KX125, Ward's bike has a green gas tank. Unlike the stock item, however, the works model is aluminum. It sits astride a hand-made chromoly frame where the stocker utilizes a steel version. According to McAndrews, the single radiator is a production item, the capacity of which was enlarged for ] 984 models after the same was done for the 1983 works bike. Also on the hand-made list is the front fork, a Kayaba unit with 43mm stanchions. Only oil and springs are utilized, and travel is greater than that of stock suspension by a good margin. The reed valve motor housed in the frame is a mixture of productionbased and handmade items. The clutch cover is sandcast, but the center cases and the cylinder head are based on what consumers may purchase. The cylinder is ported, and the exhaust flows through a pipe that ix'g-an life as a production stamping. A 34mm Mikuni handles thecarburetion chores, and breathes through a side mounted airbox. Kayaba also handles the rear suspension duties with a single shock unit not available to tbe general public. The Uni-Trak strut and rocker arm are adjustable for length to vary themechanicdI leverage on the shock. The swingarm is, of course, aluminum and hand-made. Both hub are magnesium. The front disc rotor is larger than stock, and drilled for lightness. The rear bub retains a drum brake, but McAndrews ut'ilizes a reardiseforWard's 250. With aU the oil in the machine, it weighs in at 194.5 pounds, according to McAndrews. That's a half a pound over the AMA/FIM minimum, although McAndrews admits that scales used in tech inspections across the country can and do vary. We're sure that there is more to Ward's weapon than whilt we've listed here, but most motorcycle manufacturers tend to guard their secrets. Oh to be alone with a works bike, a stocker for comparison, and a set of tools. . , '. o _ ~ City State Zip _ ENTER my subscription/renewal at $5,and send me a FREE posterl I want the 0 Three-Wheeler 0 Odyssey 0 Race Kart poster. o Send a gift subscription at $5 to: Name Address _ City State Zip _ And with that gift send 0 mel 0 them a FREE posterl IIThey want the 0 Three-Wheeler 0 Odyssey 0 Race Kart poster. o POSTERS Only.
