TEN YEARS AGO Team Honda scored two outofa possible three wins as the AMA National MoLOcross season opened at Hangtown. [n the 125s, Marty Smith captured the win over teammate Chuck Bower by tallying a 1-2-1. Tim Hart debuted the monoshock 125 Yamaha, and although he crashed out of the final maLO, rode hard and defeated Smith in the second round. In the 250s, it was new red, white and blue standard bearer Billy Grossi smoking the field in both moLOS for the overall win. Second, with a pair of the same, went to Husky-mounted Marty Tripes followed by defending National Champ Gary Jones who rode a new Can-Am to a pair of thirds. It looked like it was going LO be a red sweep as Honda's Red Staten took the first 500cc mota, but he was knocked off course and out of contention in the second maLO. Yamaha's Mike Hartwig went on to win that mota, and his 3·[ just did beat out the 2-2 posted by CZ privateer Tony DiStefano. DaYLOna winner Giacomo Agostini was still above room temperature, winning both legs of the Imola 200 on a facLOry Yamaha TZ700. Kenny Roberts was Ago's only competition, trailing the multi-time World Champ by four seconds in the first race, but the second event was not so close, Yamaha riders Tuevo Lansivouri and Gene Romero finished 3-4, followed by Suzuki's Barry Sheene. Two other North Americans competing, Kawasaki riders Yvon DuHame[ and Art Baumann, retired with mechanical troubles. Finishing one point behind them were Dave Sims and Bobby Schwartz. Riding a 250 Husky, Nevada's Jack Johnson won the ORA Baker-to-Vegas hilre and hound. Jim Fishback, on a 400 CZ, and Cordis Brooks, on a 250 Bultaco, had diced for the lead through most of the race, but then the pair got lost just past Stateline, and Johnson LOok over the lead. Brooks recovered for second, but Fishback retired after he blew his second shock absorber. Third overall was·inherited by A.C. Bakken, who was also first Open Expert.
