Wasden finally showed up at the finish line, but the manner in which he made it in - towed by a pickup truck - was to mean his disqualification. "We got back into it after breaking the shock," said Wasden, "only to seize right there (the dry lake). Not my day, huh? I was literally crawling across the dry lake because I didn't want that to happen. Now they're talking about disqualifying me. It's a bad deal." Race director Folks said of his decision, "I feel bad about it because those kids rode their asses of£. They didn't cheat; they broke a rule. It's a safety concern that no vehicles go out on the course, and I told the guy with the pickup twice nOl to take it out on the course." With Wasden and Pierce out, fourth overall went to the Chuck Pettigrew/ Tim Lawrence,Can-Am. They crossed' the finish line after the Scott Morris/ Jeffery Phillips Husky, but lOok fourth on time. Both teams were riding in the 250cc Pro class. At fifth overaJl was the second team in the Open Pro class, the Sheehan/Thompson KTM. "A couple o[ flats and a couple of get-o£[s," said Thompson, "but all in all it was a good ride." Sheehan said, "On the first loop I was running 30 seconds behind Smith when my skid plate got caught on something and flipped me right over the bars. I had to stop there and make repairs. But after six flat tires and a bunch o[ other problems last year, this time we pulled it o£[. Maybe we even made a dollar or two." In the l25cc Pro ranks, Kline and Hoesch continued their smooth ride to take the class win. "We didn't have any real problems," said Kline, "and after the fjrst loop we led it all the way. The course was pretty damn rough, though." The Kline/Hoesch entry was backed by Skip's Ameritone Paint and Valley Plastering, both o[ Las Vegas. A pair of proven competitor who usually compete against each other, Arizona's David Miller and Cali[ornia's Richard Jackson, combined [or the Over 30 Pro win. "Morris Harman and An Knapp had the lead in the early going," said Jackson, "and Russ Jones and James Vincent were close too. But we're here now. Sponsors? You'lI have to ask David. He called me a week ago and asked if I wanted to ride the 400. My bike is in a million pieces," concluded Jackson, who usuaJly competes under the Kern Spon Cycle/Up-Tite Husky banner. "Malcolm Smith and Arizona Husqvarna," replied Miller to Jackson's comment. It was a pairof Arizonans dominating the sponsman division. Mark Mitchell and Sam Rames, on a Husky 250 CR, had the lead by the end o[ the first loop and never let it go. "We told people we were going to do some business here," grinned Mitchell, "and we did.
