Schumacher shoots to Kansas MX wins By Brad Jones HEPLER, KS, MAR_ 25 Hot of[ the national trail, lef[ Schumacher wound up with decisive wins in the 125 and 250cc Expert classes today_ While heavy rains prevailed all week, the day's racing was held with sunny skies and 50 degree temperatures. Many riders had trouble in a few of the muddy spots, but Schumacher breezed by Jack Lambert and Bart Shiflett on the first lap of the l25cc Experts, and weIlL on to win by a large margin over Shiflett. The second moto start was a close race between Shiflett and Schumacher, with "Schu i , leading after the second corner. After a disappointing fourth in the first moto, Joe Burke came alive on his new Kawasaki to overtake Shiflett for second. Burke moved in fairly close to Schumacher and blasted by at the midway point. Schumacher said later, "I missed a shift in a berm and he got by me before I gotgoingagain." Schuchased Burke all the way to the £lag, knowing the whole time that he had the overall in the bag. Schumacher handily won the 250cc Experts aboard his national bike. Shi£lett and Lambert kept an eye on Schu but never got close enough to challenge. Two relatives of Joe Burke also did some heavy combat. Randy Burke won both motos in the 125cc Novice class, and Mike Burke came close to winning the first Open Expert moto. However, an overshot berm near the end of the race cost Burke the lead. In the second moto, Mike's Suzuki got water in the engine, causing him to drop off the pace of the leaders. Results eo BEG: 1. York broke his Honda in practice, borrowed Todd Kale's Yamaha, and promptly went out to trounce both divisions of racing. In the first fracas, York had to deal with Honda hotshoe Experts Bo Stegall and "Smokin' " Tom Holtan, who gave chase in second and third. Next in line, for a time, were Intermediates Matt Haag, Mark Nelson, and Justin McKinley. Nelson managed half the moto before retiring on lap four. York lapped up the track and the first moto laurels. Stegall, Holtan, Haag and McKinley fell in behind to round out the top five 250cc positions. The second contest was nearly an exact replica of the first outing. York again "Yamahauled" to the lead, where he remained for the duration of the heat. Experts Stegall and Holtan headed up the place and how spots. Team Green and Good Times Cycle rider Billy Whitely dominated the l25cc Intermediate action. The talented young trooper displayed his wares with a winning flair. Whitely went right to the head of the class in moto one, gelling a good gate and running off with the holeshot. Jason Jessup, in his first-ever Intermediate ride, was in second place ahead of Experts Brian Smith, Stuart McAvoy and Terry Maddalozzo. Whitley claimed another victory with a jaunty Jessup second all the way. McAvoy moved up to first' Expert, with Smith and Maddalozzo following. Sanders saddled third Intermediate, just ahead of Carter. Whitley stole the show again in moto two, with Jessup in pursuit through lap four, when he retired from the race. At that point Carter took over the runner-up spot, which he held to the wire. Matt Alexander led the Experts until lap three, when McAvoy, who was recovering from a first lap crash, exerted his prowess to take over the division lead. When the checkered £lag fell, Whitley crossed the line first, followed by Carter, McAvoy, Sanders and Smith. • Results 60 MINI: 1. Jody North (Hon); 2. Mikoy Byrd (Han); 3. Willy _ n (Kow). eo JR: 1.
