Terry Cunningham. still "riding conservatively." finished second. just one point back of Hines. His bike is a 250 CR/WR hybrid. II, for a total of 23 for the day and the overall B laurels. Both riders finished well within the top 20 overall. Another rider on row 64 - Australian Geoff Ballard -led Shillinger and Hawkins through most of the run and finished second in the 250cc A class with a score of 21. "If I can ever get the timekeeping down I think I can win one of these things," Ballard said, "but I burned two checks today. I lost another point when I stopped to pull out a stick from my wheel. Shillinger went past and through the check a few yards down the trail. ·1 followed him in two seconds later and got another point." On the opposite end of the num bel'S was Michigan rider Brian Lohman, . who mounted a Husky 250WR and broke trail most of the day from row three. "It wasn't really that bad out front," Lohman said, "since they had the course well marked and the trails were easy to follow. The woods were tight - tighter than we have back home - but it's a lot better than tryjng to ride through the snow." With a 36-point score, Lohman. didn't place in the top 10 in the 250cc A class, but he didn't seem to mindhe was content with simply enjoying the sunny weather and temperatures in the 70s. "I'd like to stay down here longer," Lohman added. Charlie Stapleford of Delaware topped Michigan rider Carl Scharphorn by two points - 40 to 42 - to win the Senior class. "Winning makes the trip worthwhile," StapJeford said, :'bUl the ride today was more like a 100-mile motocross than an enduro. I prefer enduros where you have to think a bit more about timekeeping. ,. All in all, most riders had praise for the event. The majority of com- plaints were lodged in regard to the length of the final section, which was infested with miles of deep sand whoops. Many riders simply ran out of energy in the final miles. But Kevin Hines looked fresh upon arrival at the final check. And with two consecutive National Enduro wi AS under his belt, Hines already has his eye on the title.
