"I'm ready to give it my best..' In the first moto, Chandler placed a come-from-behind fourth but crashed in the second moto while bidding for the lead during the first lap. Chandler recovered and rode over half the race befora pulling off. More Saddleback notes: Yamaha's Warren "Peace" Reid found a new job while on the mend with a broken leg he suffered at the opening Supercross round in Anaheim. Reid, along with Larry "Supermouth" Huffman, announced the event. However, Reid said he'd rather be racing. Southern California desert racer Chuck Stearns has picked up a ride in the May 11-19 Rallye de Atlas, a France-to-Africa off-road race in which he'll compete aboard a Yamaha TT600. The rally, which begins in Paris but is run largely in Morocco, has drawn 250 entries so far for car and bike classes, and Steams is the only American entered in the 2287-mile event. Steams is sponsored by Works Performance, O'Neal Distributing and Kal-Gard. California Senate Bill 1887, which will allow Green Stickie-registered bikes to have limited and specific road privileges for trailhead access and refueling or camping while riding on trails of the California OHV trail system, is being heard by the Senate Transportation Committee this month. Comments can be directed to committee chairman john Foran (D-San Francisco), as well as Senators Ray johnson (I-Sacramento) and john Seymour (R-Anaheim), both of whom have voiced opposition. Continental Products Corp., the U.S. marketing subsidiary of Germany's largest tiremaker, has announced a national "sport-tour" sweepstakes. Grand prize will be an expense-paid motorcycle tour of Germany and a visit to the 1984 International Motorcycle Exposition in Cologne. Second prize will be an expense-paid trip to the annual October Pro-Am in Daytona Beach, Florida. The 50 third-prize winners will receive matched sets of new Continental SuperTwins. Team Husqvarna'sKevin Hines edged teammate Terry Cunningham by a single point, 15 to 16, for the overall win in the Sandlapper National Championship Enduro in Pelion, South Carolina, on Sunday, April I. jeff Fredette (Kaw) finished third overall with a score of 17, with Dave Bertram (Hus) placing fourth overall with 19. Overall A honors fell to Gary johnson (Hus), while Bob Shillinger (Mai) topped the A ranks. National Enduro Champion Mike Melton was on the DNF list due to mechanical woes with his 400WR Husky. Honda will be the official sponsor of the May 5-6 AMA/Camel Pro Series double header at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San jose, California. With the four-cylinder K model BMWs due in the U.S. this summer, BMW of North America is selling the last 7401 OOOcc opposed twins to come off the assembly line as "Last Edition" models. The 740 machines will have "Last Edition" emblazoned across their sidepanels, and each machine's owner will get a personalized certificate of ownership. Whether or not AMA/Camel Pro Series co-point leader Ricky Graham will ride the April 7 TT National at Ascot Park will remain in question until just before the event. The Honda teamster cracked his right heel in five places on March 18 in a trail riding accident, but has been seeing sports medicine specialist Dean Miller on a regular basis since then. "He's moving along pretty well:' said Graham's father Bill in an April 2 telephone conversation. "The swelling has gone down and most of the bruises are gone, but he still doesn't know if he'll ride Ascot. He intends to ride practice there, and then make a decision." California Assembly Bill 2489, the measure introduced by Assemblyman Richard Floyd (D-Lawndale) to create and fund a motorcycle rider education program, passed the Assembly on March 29. The bill calls for a $2 surcharge on motorcycle registrations to provide approximately $1.3 million annually for enlargement of existing rider education prog)'ams as well as for driver education and other public awareness activities. The measure now goes on to the State Senate. The Rider Advanced Training School, oriented toward BMW riders of average riding ability who want to refine their skills, has expanded this year's course schedule to include seven sessions. Gregg Hansford, the Australian RRGP star of the late '70s for Kawasaki, is back in the motorcycle industry., at least Down Under. Retired from active competition, Hansford recently bought a Yamaha shop in the city of Brisbane. "I sponsored him for a lot of years and now he's sponsoring me," said Fred Spencer, Sr., father of reigning 500cc World Champion Freddie Spencer. "That's a switch, isn't it7 I'm racing modified outboard engine power boats. I've got three boats which I can run in two different classes." -~~-------- ESPN, the _G!,ble television sports channel, will begin a motorsport program called Speedwef!k in early April. Although still in the planning stages, the show will tentatively air on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. Auto racing announcers Larry Neuber and Bob jenkins will co-host the show. Two-wheeled competition will be covered on the show as it is on Motorweek Illustrated, the highly successful show on cable station WTBS. QUOTE OF THE WEEK (MONTH7 YEAR7): According to an article in the April issue of Car and Driver magazine, Indy 500 winner and motorcyclist Parnelli Jones once described the Baja 1000 as an "all-day plane crash." Dirt tracker Dave Hebb has teamed up with former Harley-Davidson Racing Team tuner Babe DeMay for the '84 Camel Pro Series season. ''I'm building his engines and bikes," said DeMay, "We're calling the eHor,t DeMay Racing Enterprises and I'm still looking for a major sponsor. Meanwhile, Dave is involved in a training program and is taking public speaking classes one night a week. Being able to communicate with the press and sponsors is a step toward being successful." John leale and Tony McAndrew have joined Carlisle Tire & Rubber Company as district sales managers. leale will be responsible for the sale of Carlisle brand motorcycle and ATV tires and tubes in the Eastern United States and Canada, while McAndrew will have similar responsibilities in the Western United Statesand Canada. leale has an extensive background in the motorcycle industry, having owned and managed a motorcycle dealership and served in sales and sales management positions with a major motorcycle parts and accessory distributor. He also has had a lifelong involvement in motorcycle competition, including professional flat track and speedway, and race promotion at a number of East Coast tracks. McAndrew is equally familiar with the motorcycle industry, having held sales and sales management positions with several major motorcycle tire manufacturers and motorcycle pam and accessory distributors. HosPITal STOP: Christine Bauer crashed during an American Road Racing Association (ARRA) event at Willow Springs Raceway, compressing one vertebra in her lower back and breaking three in her upper back. ''I'm OK, " she told us in a Monday morning, April 2, telephone conversation. ''I'm going to miss the Riverside Pro-Am Formula Two race, but I hope to make the Elhart Lake round. This was an expensive crash for me because I had been doing motorcycle stunts the week before for the Fall Guy, doubling Heather Thomas, and I was supposed to work this week as well." The California Racing Club (CRC) Dunestown Series, which begins April 29 at Edwards Air Force, will qualify riders to fill out the field of the June 2 Wrangler Supercross at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. HosPITal STOP: Honda Support rider john Rheinholt, a class winner in this year's Florida Winter-AMA Series, crashed while practicing for the April I Saddleback AMA MX National. Rheinholt crashed on March 28, and underwent surgery at Chapman General Hospital for removal of his spleen. As of presstime, Rheinholt was in good condition, and a collection was made to fly him home to Florida. The largest single donation was $500 from Kawasaki.
