SUPER 81KE WEEKEND April 14, 15, 1984 Riverside Raceway The Canyon Racer's Poclcet Guide to Advanced Motorcycling Techniques Bell 100 Super Bike Cup. By David Mallet and John Imre with Steve Baker Published by Canyon Racer Publications AMA "The endless canyon road ·snakes ahead before you, newly paved, deserted, and perfectly banked. Now is the time for it to all come together - the ultimate ride. "You work up your speed as the sense of exhilaration grows. Braking deeply into the corner, riding a perfect trajectory, you accelerate hard out of the turn. "The road speeds by you, a dark ribbon to be mastered only by the canyon racer ... " The book starts out with this introduction and goes from there to a stepby-step manual on improving one's canyon-carving techniques. It contains five sections: Body Position, Braking, Steering, Speed and Cornering, and each of those is further broken down into individual steps to be mastered. Also included are a number of illustrated diagrams which seem a bit simplistic, but do the job. The Pocket Guide emphasizes the safety aspect in the discussion of lines to be taken through different types of corners, with safe ones shown. In the discussion of brakinK, safety is also a consideration, as the following excerpt shows: "In giving priority to safe braking, we don't imply that you should be off tjle binders long before you reach the apex. Instead, make a reasonable allowance for hazards." This book is not aimed at the road racer, but for the typical canyon crazy, it gives a good common sense background for going fast safely. Of note in the book is an interview with Steve Baker, America's first World Road Racing Champion. In the interview he answers some of the more commonly asked racing questions. In the book's introduction, it is stated that the book is not intended as a road racing manual, and also not intended for the novice rider. It is supposedly aimed at the "serious canyon rider," but any serious canyon rider should already know 90% of the information contained in the book. Its contents seem to be oriented more toward the novice rider, who would probably see some improvements in his/her skills after reading it. If you are already a fast rider, you would do better/to invest a few bucks more and buy Keith Code's book . Twist of the Wrist, whikh is quite a bit more advanced. The Canyon Racer's Pocket Guide is available for $9.95 from Canyon Racer Publications, P.O. Box 20668, Seattle, WA 98102. ....... .......
