line in the 250cc and Open Pro classes was a sign of another rule change for the year. Just as the NMA and the AMA have relaxed or dropped their restrictions against AMA Pros with low numbers competing in Amateur events, the GNC now has no restrictions. Riders must qualify for the event, the Golden State Series and the Florida Series are all designated Qualifiers. Despite the presence of Larson, who blew a shock in his qualifying molO and finished firth, Kawasaki riders Rodney Barr from North Carolina and Richardson were the favored riders going into the final. Richardson fell on the first lap and could only recover from last to 19th, and Barr had his engine seize. He crashed while riding with one hand lO signal he was pulling over. Kirk Spencer holeshot the final ahead of fellow Yamaha rider Daft, Kawasaki riders Tommy Waus and Denis and Larson. Spencer made Larson work but Larson eventually passed for the lead and the win. Spencer was second in both the final and the overall. Daft was third overall for a Yamaha sweep of the lOp three places. Watts was fourth and Schumacher firth. Perhaps the most watched race of the day was a mechanics' race for dads and mechanics after the final molO of the day. Started as a clever ruse to keep fathers out of the scorers' hair for a few minutes longer, the race drew huge spectator interest. Team Honda's Mini rider Dale Storbeck's mechanic Kris Bigelow took the win over DMC crazyman Dave Miller on Eddie Hicks' Yamaha. Pete Sullivan scammed a ride on Scou Brown's Pro-Circuit Honda and neued third. There are far worse tracks around the country to have a mud run on. The Finals provided good racing for the riders and spectators alike, surely it will begin to get the recognition it deserves as the third largest Amateur event in the country. • Results _ TEENY MINI: 1.
