final round to defeat fellow Suzuki rider Charles Grossman (8.82/149.75). The top qualifier in the event was Randy Mason, and his 8.53-second run was the quickest ever run by a Kawasaki. In speedway news across the pond, the British league has a new speedway team, and two American riders on the roster. The team is the Wolverhampton Wolves, and they will be captained by U.S. star Dennis Sigalos, formerly with Ipswitch. Also on the team is new recruit Rob "Five Flavors" Pfetzing. In another dgvelopment, the Eastbourne Eagles signed Steve lucero to their squad. He'll join British league veteran Bobby Schwartz in the line-up. Matt Guzzetta, here being interviewed at Daytona for the TV show Motorweek Illustrated, did the seemingly impossible. His Suzuki-powered streamliner went from San Diego, California, to Daytona on one tank of gas. The Suzuki carried 12 gallons and used 11.4 for an average of 213 mpg. Gerald Foster co-rode in the Motorcyclist Magazine-backed effort. 2 Honda teammates Johnny O'Mara and David Bailey split wins in two nights of Supercross racing in a Paris, France, stadium March 14-15. In Wednesday night action, Bailey was the early leader, but when he fell O'Mara took over the lead and ran away with the race. Bailey finished second with Yamaha rider Ricky Johnson third ahead of teammates Brae Glover and Danny LaPorte. Thursday night's race, which was broadcast live on French national television, featured a three-way battle for the lead. O'Mara fell in the .Iate laps and dropped to third as Bailey led Johnson home in a close contest. Glover took fourth again, while Kawasaki's Georges Jobe finished fifth. The stadium in which the race was held filled to its 12,000 capacity each night, with many spectators being turned away. Each night's win paid a reported $10,000 in purse money. The Miller High Ufe Supercross Kickoff, which drew 70,000 spectators to Anaheim Stadium, will air on NBS on Saturday, March 24. The coverage will kick off a new NBC program, SpeedWorld, hosted by BruceJenner and Johnny Rutherford. Cheek local listings for the time and channel in your area. Pro Stock motorcycles ran with the cars at the NHRA Gatornationals drag race run March 16-18 at Gainesville, Florida. Philippe .Berlatier (Itl) took second while Thierry Michaud (Fan) was third ahead of defending World Champion Eddy Lejeune (Hon). David Bailey, the'only rider in the Paris contingent that was on the entry list for the Talladega (Alabama) Supercross on Sunday, March 18, hopped onto a 747 jet shortly after winning the Thursday event in Paris and arrived in Talladega late Friday evening. "The trophy they gave me for winning in, Paris was so large they had to put it in one of the bathrooms on the airplane," Bailey said, "and as far as purses go, I brought home far more money than what I would've had if I won one of the I"Sport Supercross events in the U.S:' Jeff Ward, winner of the Talladega Supercross, says he is shooting for four titles in 1984. In Talladega, Mark Barnett's works Suzuki sported a longer travel version of the new rear suspension which was unveiled in Daytona. In an effort to get more power out of the 250cc motor, the cylinder was switched back to the same one used in early 1983 on the works machines. A disc brake was also fitted to the front. The rSDE Support Fund, Inc., run by Dick and Joyce France, is again seiling merchandise to raise money for the American squad which will compete in tbe annual "Olympics of motor.cycling" in Holland on October 1-6. The merchandise list includes Tshirts ($9), long-sleeved T-shirts ($12), sweat shirts ($15) and sweat pants with the ISDE Logo on the legs ($15). Postage on each item is $1.50. The Frances are also offering three classes of certificates, signed by each American rider competing in the lSDE. A $100 donation gets a gold certificate, $50 buys a silver and $25 is good for a bronze. Also available are patches ($4), pins ($3) and stickies ($2).
