Day!ona Dirt Track series: Round 3 Boody lastest in Daytona Ball Mile By Mike & Anne Adair BARBER VILLE, FL, MAR. 4 Ted Boody withstood the challenges of Grand National Champion Randy Goss to win the Daytona/Busch Half Mile at Vol usia County Speedway in a thrilling Expert feature event. We got off to a shaky stan at Houston, but now it's all coming together." Boody's win put him into the series points lead and he displaced Tim Mertens for that honor. Mertens was knocked out of the program when he collided with Gary Scott in a heat race. "Scott slammed into me and put me out," said Mertens. "I put in a protest about it." Referee Freddie Ephrem said, "It·s one of those cases where no track official saw the incident. My hands are tied; I can't take any action." Novice Rusty Rogers captured his second main event win of the series and has already collected most of the advancement points he needs tojump up into the Junior ranks. In the Novice final, Virginian Rogers took an early lead with his Tex Peel-built Harley-Davidson 500cc single, but he then had to fight off Indiana's Brad Furlong through the last few laps. "I feel great," said Rogers after taki ng the checkered flag. "I got a good start and stayed down low. 1 knew he (Furlong) was coming. We've been racing together a lot and he's fast." Californian Chris Carr picked up where he left off at HousLOn as he LOpped a strong field of Juniors in their main event. Carr cleared turn one after the start first and the race was his despite an outside challenge from Ohioan Don Estep. "I was late into turn one on the start and I had to pass four guys on the outside," said Carr in winner's circle. "I watched Randy Goss do it in his heat and I just did the same thing." Ronnie Jones led Dan Ingram, Boody, Goss, SCOll Pearson and Ganh Brow across the stan/finish line at the completion of the first lap of the Expert main. but Boody and Goss moved by Jones on lap three and frOll1 there on il was at wO-lnan show.
