In Costa Mesa racing was very tight during the Coors Spring Classic. Here. from left to right. is Kelly Moran. Bobby Schwartz and Sam Ermolenko. Alan Christian stole the spotlight by capturing the Scratch main win ahead of Ermolenko and Schwartz. and Cook doing so mostly on one wheel. Rick Miller outgaled his rivals in a semi, but Gene Woods blew by him around turn twoon the second re"olution, but Miller, adclinga gression to his usual ompression. LOok the lead back and won. Moran passed Rob Pfetzing to win his semi. Sigalos and Cook gated their way to the main out of their one-man tran fer semis. Moran. in a ra e as lose as could be, led for three and three-quarters of the race, but Sigalos, with a frantic, lastturn move beat the Champ by a spoke to the line. In Second Division racing, Randy Blevins rode hi LI ual solid ride LO take his heat, while flat tracker Danny Perkins in his speedway debut, looked good winning his other heal. Blevins muscled by Perkins on the third lap LO win the main. David Alvarez was third. Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Dennis Sigalos; 2. Kelly Moran; 3. Rick Miller: 4. John Cook. HANDICAP MAIN: 1. Randy Bennett; 6. Dennis Hall. Brad Oxley and Bobbt Schwartz get a little close in EI Centro. Oxley finished second in the Handicap main behind Jim Lawson. Dennis Sigalos topped the Scratch main. I Speedway roared back into the hearts and minds of the faithful, but only after many of them survived their own personalized 10 version of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride down the brutal and dangerous Highway 86 almostLO the border and the California Mid-Winter Fair.Ju tlike the tourists from up nonh, the locals enjoyed speedway, too - the T-shin . This was promoter Ron PresLOn'~ second annual Denny Pyeall Memorial. in honor of everyone's pal who was killed ra ing in England in 1982. Wh n it was all over. Dennis Sigalos and Jim Lawson both headed nonh with a van full of ca h after winning a main each. The track, at 212 yards, was a bit longer than last year; the holes began forming about the same times and places as last year, and just like last year, none of this slowed anyone down - they either went fast or fell over. Kelly Moran showed off the new n urn ber one on his back LO the other in his heat race as he wheelied hi way around traffic. Wayne Leutz, Ron Blanton, Andy Nonhrup, Dennis Bransford and Mike Mazzacane (on a Maely) were all heat winners. "udden am" Ermolenko. who never goes around holes (he goes through them), blew by Dennis Briggs LO win his semi as the crowd showed signed of becoming hysterical. Mazzacane and Law n won their semis in stan-LO-finish non-thrllling fashion, while behind them, everyone else LOok turns passing each other or hitting hay bales. Brad Oxley closed itLO a few lengths around thefinal bend but couldn't do much aboutrainingon Lawson's winning cruise. The ratch heats were prelly much aHairs of the gate with lillIe passing. All the usual guys won, with Moran A jam-packed hou e of enthusiastic speedway fans braved a chilly night to watch the'Coors Spring Classic as speedway returned to the Orange County Fairgrounds for the 15th consecutive eason. The night also marked the return of two old traditions at the popular beach area dirt track. Larry "Supermouth" Huffman returned to the microphone and Alan "Crazy" Christian returned LO the winner's circle at the end of the action-packed evening. Racing against a field comprised of the be t riders that American speedway can offer; Christian turned in a resounclingeffort that propelled him to wins in four of his five cratch races
