Soutbern Cailfornla.Arizoa Western hotline The big fight was between the Novice leaders Charles LaDuca and Craig Han. LaDuca was pouring on the coals at the stan and went up the hill • more sideways than straight, but first, nonetheless. Han was right there pushing, and got by in lap two. The two bauled knob to knob for the entire race, but Han maintained the advantage and got the win followed by LaDuca. Results (Above) A couple of riders battle at Saturday Saddleback MX. Jefferson celebrates President's month at Carlsbad By Kenneth Stein Arnold on the gas atCRC Diamondback GP By Terry Rezek ORANGE, CA, FEB. 19 Starting a race before noon is bad enough, but 8:30 a.m. is barbaric. No wonder that the first racers in California Racing 22 Club's Diamondback GP had some problems reading the course markings and found themselves running a shoner course than some others in the same race. Whatever the cause, it merited a restart. When the 250cc Amateurs, Novices and Beginners took off again, everyone followed the same route and the race was on. john Downey was the big beneficiary of that restart. Downey's bike would not start on the first attempt and he was left behind. On the restart, he got a bigger kick and was in the lead on the first lap, closely followed by Richard Arnold. Everret Neal was at the front of the Novices with Rick Pickering running second. The win was decided at the tough hairpin; a 1800 turn full of grapefruit-sized clumps around a fence at the end of a flat high-speed straight. Arnold caught Downey on the inside right at this turn and Downey laid it down in the rough outside. He was up in an instant but in second and was not able to get the lead back. They chased each other for the rest of the race, but at the end it was still Arnold first, Downey second. In the Novice ranks, Neal got into a tangle with Craig Allen, who was running third Amateur and, in the confusion, Pickering dashed past to take and hold the lead to the end. Bob Inbold had been practicing thesLarts before his race which included a lip at a road crossing with an uphill on the other side of the road. The practice paid off. At the stan of the 1001200cc race, he took the holeshot, hi't that lip flat out and cleared the road with a single jump. He was pulling away going up the hill. Keith Senn was second and got by Inbold on the bl ind side of the course to lead the first lap. Inbold was hot and was back in the lead by lap two to stay and win. Senn hung in at second Amateur. Doug Allen led the Novices off the line but his advantage lasted only one lap as Richard Fernandez quickly moved into the ovice lead to stay. Fernandez was riding an in pired race and methodically moved up until he wa~ harassing Senn for the laner pan of the race. Fernandez easily took first Novice with Allen in at second. jim Lichlyter got the drop on the rest of the Open Amateurs off the line, but Bob Hanrahan out-dragged him going up the hill and LOok the lead. By the end of the first lap, Dean Hall had moved into second behind Hanrahan and that established the finishing order for the Amateurs. CARLSBAD, CA, FEB. 26 It seems appropriate that Con- tinental Motorsport Club's last points race of President's month, held at Carlsbad Raceway today, would be dominated by a man named jefferson. Andy jefferson, on a Husky, won half of the eight moLOS held, dominating both the 250cc and 500cc Pro classes. . Robol Rodger~ and his Honda holeshot the first 500cc Pro moto with jefferson running a close second. It took jefferson less than two laps to make up the difference as he took the lead and held it all the way LO the end. Two mows later in the 250cc class, Honda rider Pete Murray jumped into the lead followed by jefferson and Rodgers. On the second lap, jefferson caught Rodgers but Murray eluded him until mid-race. As jefferson caught Murray, he opened up the lead. Rodgers closed the gap on Murray, but he couldn't get by a.s the checkered flag fell. Murray held on for second. Rodgers' biggest mistake of the day didn't happen on the track. It happened earlier, when he talkedjefferson inLO coming LO Carlsbad. "Andy was going to go to Adelanto. but I told hi m the points race was here this week. He said, 'Oh, well I guess I'll go there.' I can't believe I did that," Rodgers admitted. After a brief rest, the duo was on the line again for the second 500cc moLO. In a replay of the first, Rod~ers lost the lead as jefferson out ran him on the uphill of the first lap. "I love that uphill," jefferson said later. Rodgers realized he couldn't catch jefferson, so he opted for another plan. Gambling that jefferson was getting as tired as he was, Rodgers eased up to save his energy, and cruised around safely in second place. In the final 250cc moLO jefferson grabbed the lead at the start ahead of Murray, Craig Cable and Rodgers. Cable's Honda spent the middle laps in second about six seconds behind jefferson. In what Rodgers called his smartest race ever, he took over second when the two riders in front made errors. Yamaha-mounted Mark Howell caught Murray on the last lap, but Murray held off Howell's last-turn charge LO take th i rd. Results 500 PRO: ,. Andrew Jefferson (Hus); 2. Robot Rodgers (Han); 3. FEB. 26 The third quad-annual (ninth annual) Leap Year Grand Prix was held today at Corona Raceway under miserable conditions. Gusty winds turned the track into a dustbowl, much the opposite of last year's event held in the rain and rivers caused by a downpour. ST Racing's Gary Denton dusted the entire I 25cc Pro class to the first turn by at least five bikelengths on his '82 Suzuki. Steve Stewart (Team Green/Ultimate) and Mark Lopera (Sun west Yamaha/Team Tamm/ Spectro) exchanged second place several times through the first few corners, but it was Stewart chasing Dentonafte.r the first long straight. Stewart didn't waste any time catching Denton and made his move early on the opening lap to take the lead. Denton stayed right on Stewart's rear fender though, and for the first long lap, provided the day's best Pro action as DenLOn dogged the Kawasaki pilot. At the beginning of lap two Stewart made a mistake and Denton was right there to take advantage of it, waving to Stewart as he motored over a ten second lead. Stewart quickly was back on the track and tried desperately to make up the distance; gaining about five seconds by the half-way point of the 45-minute race. But that was about all he could gain, as Denton rode flawlessly for the remainder of the race to take the win unchallenged. Stewart came by some distance behind but still well ahead of third-place Yamaha rider Chris Craft. "I followed him and let him take all the chances," said Denton afterwards. "Thinkin~ that maybe he'd
