TEN YEARS AGO Riding a Yamaha TZ700 around Daytona's 2.5-mile tri-oval, Gene Romero seta new one-hour mOLOrcycle speed average. Romero averaged 150.6725 mph to break the 144-mph average set in 1964 by Mike "The Bike" Hailwood. However, Romero failed to break the absolute one-lap record of 160.199 mph, set the previous year by Yvon DuHamel on a 900cc Z-I Kawasaki. The World Observed Trials Championship opened with rounds in Belgium and pain. Factory Yamaha rider Mick Andrews LOok the first round in Belgium, topp'ing Bultaco's Malcolm Ralhmell. The Spanish round fell to Swedish Momesa pilot VIf Karlsson, with Rathmell duplicating his runner-up finish of the previous event. The Spanish round also had a numberof Americans competing as a result of money raised' by the annual El Trial de Espana. Lane Leavitt rode a Bu I taco to top American spot at 15th overall, with Mark Eggar borrowing a Momesa LO place 23rd. Other Americans were Marland Whaley (49th), Mike Griffitts (50th). Rich Delaney, Martin Bc:lair (56th) and George Smilh III (64th). Elsewhere in Europe, the international (not GP) motocross season began with a big event in Lummen, Belgium. Ridinga new facLOry Yamaha with a 390cc long-stroke mOLOr, Jaak Van Velthoven wem 2-1 LO win. Second wem LO Yamaha rider Frans Sigman with a 3-4. The evem proved to be rough on riders, and those on nhe injured list at the end of the day were Roger DeCoster, Heikki Mik· Ilola, Hakan Andersson and Gaston Rahier. A team race at Valley Cycle Park in southern California went to the Bultaco/Maico combination piloted by Mark Cook and Mike Todd_ Husqvarna's Nils-Arne Nilsson and Mitch Mayes were there testing a 250WR Husky, and worked their way up to lead the combined Expert classes before Nil son came over a blind dropaway and discovered, too late, a rider in his path. Second overall wem to the first 250cc team, the Bultacomoumed duo of Jon Miller and Bryar Holcomb. Dan Turner had the hot hand at an Altamont, California, mOLOcross. Riding three Hu kys, Turner posted wins in the 125 and 250cc Expert classes, and then came away with a runner-up finish in the Open Experts behind Pemon-moumed Ron Self. Neal Snarr had a good day himself, winning the Mini class on a Steens and the lOOcc Novice class on a Honda. In an imernational speedway meet in Australia, multi-time World Champs Ole Olsen and Ivan Mauger wound up tied with 13 poims apiece after the [irst five rounds. The top four points scorers wem into a final round, however, and there Mauger topped Olsen for the night's win. Third we]1t to Poland's Edward Jancarz. SAN DIEGO, CA.
