Jeff Ward (along with Goat Breker) flew back from Atlanta in the morning and landed by the pits in a helicopter. a little over an hour before his race. him. But Ward quickly reeled in Holland and soon had the lead. Once again Ward cruised on for the win and the champion hip. Holland finished second followed by Dubach, Bowman and Yamaha-mounted Mike Beier. 250cc Pro There were no factory riders in the 250cc clas and the title had already been sewed up by O'Mara, but a fierce battle for second overall was up in the air. As the pack exited the first turn in the first moto, Honda-mounted Erik Kehoe held a slight advantage over Jim Tarantino (who went into today's race with two points over Micky Dymond), Honda rider David Taylor, Team Tamm's J~ff Leisk and Honda-armed Gary Semics. Dymond was in the dust back in 12th. Kehoe got on the gas and quickly developed a sizable lead (six seconds) over Tarantino, who began feeling heavy pressure from Leisk a few laps into the race. Meanwhile, Dymond quickly made up for his bad start and took over the fifth spot by the fourth lap. Up front, ·the battle for second was fierce. Tarantino and Leisk battled fOJ many laps until Leisk finally found a way around Tarantino for econd on the 10th lap. By this time, Dymond had slipped by Semic but was too far behind Tarantino to make a move. Kehoe was hot and rode superbly for an easy win. Leisk finished second ahead ofTarantino, .Dymond and Peter Snorteland (Yam). Semics stole the econd-moto holeshot, followed closely by Kehoe and Dymond. Tarantino went down early and dropped out of the race. It didn't take long for Kehoe to zap Semics and he then opened up a huge lead only a few laps into the race. Dymond snuck up and stole second from Semics, who eventually dropped back to sLxth. Snorteland fell into the third-place slot while being pre sured by Leisk,. but the Tamm:backed rider dropped out of the race on the sixth lap. Kehoe developed a J 5-second advantage over Dymond, who could not make up any ground. Kehoe took the overall while Dymond finished second in the ooto and got his second-overall series placing. Snorteland finished third ahead of Semics and Cagiva-mounted Ron Turner. 500cc Pro Allhough Yamaha-mounted Phil Larson gave Kawasaki's Goat Breker ulcers throughout the series, Larson wasn't in contention for the lead with Breker. Larson had a slow start in the series but came on strong during the last few rounds. The only rider who had a mathematical chance at the overall eries title was Yamahamounted Scott Manning, but Manning's main concern was Larson for second overall. Larson jumped to an early lead after passing Honda-mounted Scott Sargent, who took the holeshot. Manning was in seventh while Breker was painfully putting around the course in first and second gears.' After a fourth-place start, Eaton worked up to second by lap threebut was a large distance behind the leader. Sargent followed in third, ahead of Manning and Kawasaki pilot Greg ZitterkopL Larson extended his lead with every lap while Manning started to put the move on Sargent, and near the end of the moto Manning new past Sargent over a double-jump section for third. Positions were the same when the checkered nag came out. Larson won the moLO, but a very determined Breker clinched the Open-class title by just finishing. . Again argent shot to the head of the class with Manning, Semics, Eaton, nortelandand Larson hoton his rear fender. On the first lap, Eaton shot by emics while Manning made his way by Sargent. Larson had a few problems in the early goings. but soon picked up his pace and labored into econd near the middle of the moto after Eaton put the move on a fading Marining. Larson then zapped Manning and set after Eaton. It didn't take long before Larson had control of the lead. Manning's chances for a second-place series [jill h dwindled away as he dropped back a few more positions with a broken shock. The win wem to Larson over Eaton, emics, Sargent, Snorteland and Manning. As a result, Larson finished second in the series ahead of Manning. • Results MINI EX: 1. Eddie Hicks(Vam) 1-1; 2.
